Box Score 3 McMurry University softball split a weekend series with University of Texas-Dallas in Richardson, losing 2-0, winning 10-2 and losing 5-2.
In the opener Friday, March 1, the game was scoreless until the bottom of the sixth inning when the opponent got both runs. McMurry had three hits with contributions from junior second baseman Jade Dickens (Friendswood, Texas), and junior right fielder Aliyah Tanguma (Kyle, Texas) (2).
Fifth-year senior Jenna Lewis (Hearne, Texas), who went the distance in throwing six innings and striking out four batters, was given the loss to drop her record to 2-1.
In Friday's second game, coach David McNally's team quickly put the loss aside as it scored four times in the second inning, once in the third and five times in the sixth. Sophomore first baseman Trista Brown (Crosby, Texas) started the hit parade in the second with the first of two homers for a 2 RBI that also allowed junior center fielder Mercedes Camacho (El Paso, Texas) to score. Dickens then doubled to left field for a 2 RBI than sent senior left fielder Angelica Abila (Lubbock, Texas) and junior catcher Sabrina Graf (San Antonio, Texas) across home plate. In the third, Brown got her second home run with a shot down the left field line. In the sixth, Abila singled to right field for an RBI and got to second thanks to a balk, which also allowed junior right fielder Tristyn Barton (Belton, Texas) to go to third and freshman pinch hitter Reaghan Staehely (Mission, Texas) to score. Dickens then singled through the left side for an RBI, Abila went to third and Barton went home. Still in the sixth, freshman pinch runner Lillian Contreras (Corpus Christi, Texas) stole second and Abila stole home. Sophomore shortstop Morgan Faubion (Crosby, Texas) doubled to right field for an RBI that enabled Contreras to score. Faubion then advanced to third on a wild pitch and crossed home plate. McMurry got 11 hits with contributions from Abila, Dickens (3), Faubion (2), Camacho (2), Brown (2), and Barton.
Junior Baylee Fulps (San Angelo, Texas) went the distance in throwing six innings. She had three strikeouts and raised her record to 3-0.
In the game Saturday, March 2, McMurry scored once in the fourth inning and once in the fifth. Camacho homered down the left field line for the first run. In the fifth, Staehely lined out to left field for a sacrifice RBI that allowed Abila to go to third base and junior catcher Morgan Mehaffey (Hamilton, Texas) to score. McMurry had six hits with contributions from Abila, Faubion, Camacho (2), Tanguma and freshman third baseman Elaina Herrera (Belton, Texas).
Junior catcher/pitcher Maya Mongelli (Lubbock, Texas), who threw two innings and struck out two batters, was given the loss to even her record at 1-1. Lewis pitched four innings and struck out one.
McMurry, 6-3 overall and 1-2 in the American Southwest Conference, hosts University of Mary Hardin-Baylor at 4 and 6 p.m. next Friday and noon Saturday at Edwards Field.
