GARLAND, TEXAS – McMurry University's men's and women's swimming teams kept up their impressive charges at the 2023 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Championships Friday, Feb. 10.
 
"I'm happy that most everybody who swam or had events got in positions and opportunities to score points for both teams," head coach Arthur Wang mused. "That is a telltale sign for a comprehensive team in that everybody getting a chance contributed.
 
Several people received hardware, as we have doubled our awards from the year before," he added. "We registered some nice times."
 
Leading the podium presentations for the War Hawks was the men's 400-yard medley relay underclassman crew of freshmen Monty Cortez (Corpus Christi, Texas) and Harrison Brown (Pasadena, Texas) and sophomores Caleb Bush (San Angelo, Texas) and Weston Hamilton (Austin, Texas) swam to a 3:42.55 which placed them third. Cortez came back for seconds medals-wise, placing eighth in the 100-yard backstroke (55.54 seconds). The women's freshman combination of Maddy Rohrer (Auburn, Wash.) and Caitlyn Sauer (Anthem, Ariz.) also kept their impressive first-year resumes intact. Rohrer medaled in the 100-yard breaststroke, taking eighth (1:11.42), and Sauer was seventh in the 400-yard individual medley (4:59.25).
 
Due to those high marks, both squads went over the 200-point team threshold to remain among the top five going into Saturday, Feb. 11, competition at Garland Independent School District's Natatorium.
 
"Saturday could be one of our strongest days yet," Wang noted, looking ahead to the championships' final sessions.
