2022 HALL OF HONOR RECOGNITION - SEPT. 28, 2022

ABILENE, TEXAS - McMurry University's athletic department will be paying tribute to its 2022 Athletic Hall of Honor inductees along with the Bob and Clara Brown and Grant Teaff Beyond The Game award winners throughout the week of Sept. 26-Oct. 1.

We continue with Hall of Honor inductees Bertram Green '09 and Jake Mullin '12.

BERTRAM GREEN '09, Men's Track and Field - Green's need for speed carried him well on the track for former head coach Barbara Crousen. He was a two-time NCAA Division III outdoor All-American and national champion in the 4x100 and 4x400 meter relay events in 2007 and 2008.

Green's awards cadre also included being a three-time American Southwest Conference champion and a two-time all-league honoree.

"Running track is the hardest thing I've ever done," he admitted. "After taking a break and not coming to college until I was in mid 30s, it was tough to do something that intense every day. To do the work outs and about almost twice the age of everyone around you, there just isn't the same recovery time.

The biggest deal for me was wondering 'How can I get extra workouts in to improve without being injured?'," he added.  "I got it figured out by doing so three times a week at 4 a.m. by myself to be ready for practices after classes were over. I had initially come to McMurry to play football, but Coach Crousen saw me doing our 40 testing during the summer and asked if I would like to run track. I initially said no, but Coach can be persistent, so eventually, I decided to do so. It was a great decision. My entire McMurry family was made even better by being in track.  That family feeling didn't end with athletics, either. It continued on the academic side, especially with professors Jeffrey Kinlaw and Joel Whittemore. It was great having more in-depth conversations with them."

Green owns his company, 38-39 Instruction, in the Carrollton, Texas, area. He works with all types of student-athletes from their start in high school and giving them the opportunity to have a degree in less than five years of college. He is also a college soccer official.

JAKE MULLIN '12, Football – Showing off his prowess on the diamond and gridiron, Mullin became a household name in both during his Big Country time.

A four-year team member in both, he was named the American Southwest Conference's Male Athlete of the Year following the 2009-10 academic year. For the War Hawks football program, Mullin earned the ASC's Player of the Year honor in 2011 as part of three all-league honors while also being tabbed an NCAA Division III All-American in 2011.

On the diamond, his story was just as remarkable. Mullin was a two-time all-conference and all-region honoree and gained All-American and ASC Player of the Year accolades in 2010.

Mullin was quick to thank many people for what he was able to accomplish while being a War Hawk. "Former head football coach Hal Mumme is the single reason why I wanted to give football a shot in college," he admitted. "Not only is he considered one of the biggest innovators of the game, but he was a coach that truly allowed his players to be themselves. This not only brings each player their own confidence but it also makes it easier for the team to get closer. Continuing in football, I also have to thank coaches Matt and Holbrook. Coach Matt was my first QB coach and offensive coordinator in college and taught me the Air Raid offense. Not only was very informative and easy to learn from, he was an all-around great guy. I loved playing for him and was happy for him when he got offered an opportunity he couldn't pass up. Coach Holbrook helped me further progress in the offense as he was able to share with me his insight since he was a former QB in the exact same offense. He was a blast to play for as well and I still miss the QB dinners every Thursday night at he and his wife's house.

Among former teammates., DJ Baiza and I started playing baseball at together and both decided to try out for football," he added. "Our times at McMurry started a lifelong friendship that I will appreciate forever. Kiefer Price was one of the most intelligent players I've ever played with and I was truly blessed to have him as our center. Not only did he do a great job physically, but he was able to help me by learning the hand signals to relay the play to the rest of the line because of my speech impediment. Courte Gilbert and Jacob Owen were high school teammates to college teammates and roommates. They definitely made it easier for me to go try out for football by transferring to McMurry. Still to this day, I tell people Will Morris was the best athlete/player I had ever played with. To consistently pick me off in practice to doing the exact same thing during games, we were lucky to have his talent and personality on the team."

Mullin has recently opened his own business called "RoofsOnly.com" in Austin, Texas.
