War Hawks complete final regular season meet in Illinois

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – McMurry University Track & Field made its longest road trip of the season Thursday to wrap up the regular season, competing in the Augustana College Midwest Twilight Qualifier in Rock Island, Illinois.

The qualifier was the last regular season meet nationwide, as the NCAA will announce qualifiers later today. All qualifying marks are officially final as of Friday.

After Thursday's results were entered, McMurry's men and women had 13 marks or times in the national Top 50. Seven of those marks or times are also in the Top 25 and will likely be in the running for national qualifying.

Senior Kelby Tidwell was perhaps the biggest beneficiary of the meet, pole vaulting a new career-high mark of 3.71 meters. Her previous PR was 3.55 meters. Tidwell vaulted up 20 spots in the national rankings and now sits 23rd – putting her closer to the national qualifying bubble. She is the reigning American Southwest Conference pole vault champion and high point athlete.

Another improved mark came from junior Jayden Sloan, who ran a personal best time of 21.33 in the men's 200 to win the event against 38 other runners in a loaded field. His teammate, sophomore Dazhaun Walton, ran a time of 21.48 to place second overall.

Walton remains seventh in the nation with his conference championship-winning time of 21.09, while Sloan moves up to 23rd at 21.33. Sloan is ranked in three individual events – the 200, the 400 and the 400 hurdles.

The men's 4x100 and 4x400 relays continued showing its speed against some of the nation's best, running a time of 40.63 in the former to place third at the meet. McMurry remains fourth in the nation with its 40.52 time from the ASC Championships. Fellow conference schools East Texas Baptist (3rd) and Hardin-Simmons (11th) remain in contention with their times from the ASC race.

Meanwhile, the 4x400 relay ran a time of 3:16.76 to place 10th at the meet. The team's time of 3:13.28 at the ACU Oliver Jackson Twilight keeps McMurry ranked 12th nationally.

DonTre Sinegal jumped a mark of 6.87 meters in the long jump – short of his season-high and qualifying marks. He remains ranked in the men's triple jump at 13th with a 14.74m mark which remains in qualifying range.

Jaalah Puryear competed in the women's hammer throw and launched a 46.69m throw. Her championship-winning mark of 49.58m at the conference meet remains her best this season and ranks her 41st.

Christian Morales came close to his PR in the javelin with a five-wide toss of 55.55m to place second of 12 throwers at the meet. His season-best remains 55.87m to rank him 43rd.

The War Hawks now await to see which of its athletes qualify later today for the 2022 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field National Championships, which runs from May 26-28 in Geneva, Ohio hosted by SPIRE Institute.
