COMMERCE, Texas – McMurry University Track & Field competed alongside 22 other schools at the East Texas Invitational in Commerce, Texas on Saturday – the final meet before this week's annual War Hawks Classic at home.
The meet was hosted by Texas A&M – Commerce.
In the 10K, sophomore
Janeth Chacon set a new school record with a time of 39:44.45. This shatters her previous personal record by over two minutes, while surpassing former standout Kim Fritz's record of 41:13.07 set in 2017.
McMurry also picked up a win in the men's hammer, as freshman
Reagan Owen tossed his way into the 50 meter club with a mark of 50.99m. His new personal record ranks him first in the American Southwest Conference and among the nation's top 50 throwers.
RESULTS
Track Highlights:
- Sophomore Breauna Conner had a strong performance in the women's 200 with a new PR time of 25.53. She now ranks atop the ASC and ranks 39th in the nation. She finished ninth at the meet.
- Both of McMurry's men's relay teams ran season-best times and are among the nation's top 10. The men's 4x100 ran a time of 41.60 to rank third in the conference and eighth nationally, while the 4x400 finished at 3:18.79 to rank second in the ASC and ninth nationally.
- Sophomore Abram Maldonado was about four seconds off a school record in the men's 1500 with a time of 4:03.78, setting a new PR. He landed a spot on the podium in second place in the field of 50, while moving up to sixth in the ASC.
- Sophomore Jazmin Chacon continued the 1500 success on the women's side, also finishing three seconds off the school record with a time of 4:52.57. That PR allowed her to finish third. She is currently one of two ASC runners under five minutes on the women's side this season.
- Junior Justin DeLeon had a season-best time in the 100m hurdles at 15.73 to move up the ASC leaderboard in fifth.
- Freshmen Bethany Guzman and Jacee Dinkins set new personal bests in the 800 meter run with times of 2:29.23 and 2:33.35, respectively. Katelyn Hernandez finished directly in front of Dinkins by less than a second. Guzman finished seventh in a field of 33 runners.
- Senior multi-sport athlete Andres Martinez ran a new PR in the 5K at 16:03.20 to finish 8th in the field. The former soccer star sits just outside the conference top 10.
- Joining Janeth Chacon in the 10K were three teammates – Trinity Martinez, Aubrie Brannon and Ashley Shea. All three freshmen made their 10K debut and all sit in the top four of the ASC of five competitors.
Field Highlights:
- Joining Reagan Owen on the podium in the hammer was junior Sutton Welch, who secured silver with a mark of 48.66m. Owen and Welch sit one and two in the ASC rankings and are the only throwers above 50 meters. Jarrett Hart is third at 44.96m.
- Sophomore Elizabeth Jordan had a discus PR of 34.23m to rank third on the team and sixth in the ASC. She also led McMurry's shot put trio Saturday with a mark of 10.60m.
- Junior quarterback and javelin thrower Carlos Garibay achieved a personal best to finish fourth out of 14 with a mark of 44.92m.
- Garibay's football teammates – senior Seth Setovich and sophomore Zacchary Pomele – each had two personal bests. Both athletes had PRs in the shotput, Setovich improved in the hammer and Pomele improved in the discus. Setovich is seventh in the hammer, while Pomele is fifth in the discus.

The War Hawks will hold its home meet – the annual War Hawks Classic – on Friday, April 15 at Wilford Moore Stadium. The current schedule has the meet beginning at 10 a.m. with the men's shot put. Running events begin at 3 p.m. with the women's steeplechase.
Between events around 2:30 p.m., the program will honor 11 seniors with a special ceremony.
