Box Score ABILENE, TEXAS – The firsts of a gritty 2022-23 McMurry University women's basketball team resumed Saturday, Nov. 12.
Less than 24 hours from winning their first season-opening game since 2019-20, they equaled another mark that group set with a 2-0 start. To the thrill of a loud home crowd cheering on the Maroon, Black and White, head coach Drew Long's team used a 38-25 second-half surge to upend Texas Lutheran University 64-55.
Knocking off a second successive Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference foe, McMurry turned to the dominating senior-sophomore forward combination of
Destiny Mathews and
Emily Holland. Mathews, a native of Palestine, Texas, scored 16 points and was only a rebound short of a double-double. Holland, coming back from a 28-point, 10-rebound double-double against Schreiner the night before, came back with 16 points, eight rebounds, and three steals.
The pair also was a combined 12-of-12 from the charity stripe, part of a sizzling team effort of 25 for 31 that helped the War Hawks answer a 39-29 deficit midway through the third period by tallying 35 of the final 51 points. A suffocating defensive effort that saw McMurry garner 13 steals also aided the second-half comeback.
Freshman guard
Helana Chadwick (LaVernia, Texas) continued her steady play, compiling a second straight double-digit outing. She tallied 10 points, grabbed six rebounds, dished out an assist and picked off two steals.
Long's team continues four in a row at home Tuesday, Nov. 15. They welcome National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics member University of Southwest from Hobbs, New Mexico, to Kimbrell Arena for a 5:30 p.m. tip-off.
