GLADEWATER, Texas – Junior
Erk Nithipol hit his mid-season stride just in time to claim a top spot at the Tempest Intercollegiate in Gladewater, Texas Tuesday afternoon.
Nithipol tied third amongst a 67-player field and contributed to McMurry's A team's seventh place finish on the par-72 Tempest Golf Course.
Nithipol earned the third place slot by shooting his personal best two round total on Monday, carrying a four-under-par 140 into the final round on Tuesday. He followed up with a +6 round three to close out the match with a 218 (+2). Nithipol recorded 10 birdies and led the team in par four conversions, averaging 4.03 for the tournament. His second round score of 68 (-4) also tops the Tempest Intercollegiate records as the best single round mark since the tournament's inaugural season in 2019.
McMurry's A team shot its low round of the season on opening day, recording a 298 second round en route to a 598 (+22) mark through the first 36 holes. In the top half of the standings, the War Hawks looked to climb from a fifth-place stance on the final day, but would slip to seventh in the end with a 915-overall.
"We are very young in experience, but we showed some positive signs throughout the competition," said head coach
Jay Rees. "Despite dropping a few slots from day one, Erk played well and maintained his momentum throughout the contest. I am confident that he, along with this teammates, will continue to improve in the days to come."
Hosted by LeTourneau, the invite consisted of eleven total teams with McMurry and LETU both running an A and B squad.
Claiming the title was conference foe Mary Hardin-Baylor with a score of 878 (+14). California Lutheran followed with a score of 888 (+24).
As members of the A team,
Carson Hackmann finished 32nd with his low mark of the season, 232 (+16), while
Warren Taylor and
Sam Membrila shared a four-way tie at 41st.
John Monson landed in a tie for 45th with B team running mate
Wyatt Klekar, while
Cullen Timms finished 59th.
Santiago Carvajal (T49),
Juan Pablo Nava (T52) and
Derek Slatter (66) rounded out the B team roster.
The War Hawks return to action on Oct. 18-19 at the Crusader Invitational in Thackerville, Okla.
