WESTWORTH VILLAGE, TX – Behind an opening-round 69 from
Eli Brinton, the McMurry Men's Golf team sits just two strokes off the lead after the first round of the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) Championship.
Playing on Sunday at the par-72, 6,898-yard Hawks Creek Golf Club, the War Hawks carded a team score of 294 (+6). McMurry finishes the first 18 holes tied for third place alongside the University of Dallas. The War Hawks are well within striking distance of co-leaders LeTourneau and Texas Lutheran, who both posted opening rounds of 292 (+4).
Brinton's 3-under-par performance fueled the War Hawks' strong start, placing him in a three-way tie for first on the individual leaderboard. He currently shares the top spot with Iain Griggs of Dallas and Oliver Naumann of Hendrix.
Tallon Burgess also turned in a solid first round for McMurry, shooting a 74 (+2) to end the day tied for 14th place.
Chase Allison followed closely behind with a 75 (+3), which puts him in a tie for 20th in the field.
Rounding out the scoring for the War Hawks,
Kendrick Hoster posted a 76 (+4) to tie for 24th, while
Tripten Roberts shot a 77 (+5) to sit in a tie for 29th.
McMurry will return to the links at Hawks Creek GC for the second round of the SCAC Championship as they look to climb the leaderboard.
