Track and Field makes season debut at Washburn Open

TOPEKA, Kan. – McMurry Track and Field lifted the lid off a new season this past weekend, as 20 scholar-athletes represented the War Hawks at the Washburn Open in Topeka, Kansas on Friday and Saturday.
 
The meet, hosted by Washburn University, is the first of two indoor meets on the schedule this season.

Track Highlights:
  • Junior Nandhi Brown recorded a 9.44 time in the 60 meter hurdles, the second fastest time of her career. Brown's personal record was set in 2019 at the Texas Tech Invitational at 9.35. Brown won the third heat and finished 16th overall in a field of primarily NCAA Division II athletes on Saturday.
  • Sophomore Caleb Kwiatkowski competed in two running events, sprinting a 24.14 in the 200 meter dash and a 7.44 in the 60.
     
  • Five War Hawks competed in the 60 meter dash on Saturday, led by freshman duo Dazhaun Walton and Jamari Williams both crossing the line at 7.32 in their collegiate debuts.
     
  • A number of other freshmen made their college debut on the track Saturday, including Breauna Conner women's 400 (1:03.15), Najwa Campbell in the women's 60 meter hurdles (9.76), Rylan Rogers in the men's 60 meter dash (7.64) and Kade Kimmel in the men's 400 (55.13).
     
  • Senior Jacob Williams and sophomore Jayden Sloan led McMurry in the 400 meter dash with times of 51.32 and 51.39, respectively.
     
  • Both the men's and women's 4x400 relay teams debuted for this indoor season, with the men running a 3:25.87 time and the women crossing at 4:19.48.

Field Highlights:
  • Three War Hawks competed on Friday, including sophomore Sutton Welch in the men's shot put (11.87m), sophomore Jayden Gonzales in the men's pole vault (4.16m) and freshman Rylan Rogers in the men's pole vault (4.16m).
  • Following the shot put on Friday, Welch had a personal record on Saturday in the men's weight throw. Welch threw nearly two meters over his previous best from last season, hitting the floor at 13.54 meters. Garrett Arendall also competed, tossing a 10.76m throw.
  • Sophomore Ellie Ryan led McMurry in the women's shot put, placing 18th overall and second in her heat with a mark of 10.78 meters. Sophomore Corbin Stulir PR'ed in the same event at 9.47m, while freshmen Jaycee Brown and Kendyl Henry debuted at 8.55m and 8.21m, respectively.

Up Next:
The War Hawks continue the indoor regular season on Friday, Feb. 5 at the Herm Wilson Invitational in Wichita, Kansas. Following indoor season, McMurry currently has 11 outdoor meets on its schedule.
