Women's hoops heads to UMHB for round two, Concordia to follow

ABILENE, Texas –The McMurry University women's basketball team head back on the road for a rematch against Mary Hardin-Baylor in Belton, Texas on Thursday, Jan. 28 followed by a matchup against Concordia Texas on Saturday, Jan. 30 in Austin.

Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m. at the Mayborn Campus Center. On Saturday, the War Hawks will tip-off at 1:00 p.m. inside Concordia Fieldhouse.

UMHB will be limiting capacity to 50 percent in Mayborn Campus Center and admission is free. Entrance will be closed once capacity is met. Spectators are required to wear masks and practice social distancing. 

Concordia will not be allowing fans for home basketball games at this time.

NOTES
LAST TIME OUT – McMurry produced its best free throw shooting numbers of the season despite a 70-49 loss to UMHB last Thursday.

The War Hawks went 15-19 from the free-throw line and had a new top scorer for the first time this season in sophomore guard Valery Alvarado. Alvarado scored 13 points on 4-10 shooting from the floor and 5-6 at the line. Alvarado also led the team with eight rebounds.

Sophomore Taya Bridges posted nine points and recorded four blocks on the night, one block shy of her career high.

SCOUTING THE CRU – The Cru are headed into round two against the War Hawks after claiming round one last Thursday. The Cru pulled away from the War Hawks midway through the third quarter after Allaira Jones scored six straight points to key an 8-0 run.

The Cru would go on to earn a victory that was highlighted by Hannah Eggleston's team high of 13 points and seven rebounds followed by Jones with 10 points and a team-best nine rebounds.

UMHB scored 56 of its points in the paint and the bench combined to score 34 points.

SERIES HISTORY VS. UMHB – With the win last week, UMHB owns a slight 32-30 advantage in the series. In games since 2000, McMurry owns a 23-17 record.

The War Hawks look to earn their first conference win as well as snap a six-game losing streak against The Cru. UMHB has won nine of the last 13 in a tight rivalry. McMurry's last win over UMHB came on Jan. 13, 2018.

SCOUTING THE TORNADOS – Due to COVID-related concerns, Concordia has been plagued by schedule changes and cancellations. Without any regular season matchups, the Tornados came straight into conference play with a season opening win against Ozarks, 68-56. The Tornados then fell to UT Dallas on the road, 62-58, also marking the last contest the Tornados have played in since Jan. 9.

Against UT Dallas, sophomore guards Madi Maxwell and Natalie Velardez put on strong performances, with 17 points, and 10 points respectively. Maxwell shot 8-of-16 from the field while Velardez scored eight of her 10 points in the second half.

SERIES HISTORY VS. CTX – The all-time series is currently dead-locked between the two opponents, 30-30. The War Hawks have won three of the last six meetings. McMurry last defeated the Tornados 71-57 back on Feb. 2, 2019.

ASC WEST DIVISION – Mary Hardin Baylor leads the West with three conference wins. Hardin-Simmons and Sul Ross State both have a pair of conference wins followed by Concordia (TX) with one.

ASC EAST DIVISION – East Texas Baptist remains undefeated in the East at 6-0. LeTourneau and UT Dallas both own three conference wins while Louisiana College and Belhaven have snagged one.
