Women’s Basketball closes regular season at Ozarks, UT Dallas

ABILENE, Texas – The women's basketball regular season comes to a close this weekend for McMurry, as the War Hawks travel to University of the Ozarks on Thursday, Feb. 19 and UT Dallas on Saturday, Feb. 21.

The opening tip from Clarksville, Arkansas is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Saturday's regular season finale in Richardson, Texas is slated for 1 p.m.

NOTES

LAST TIME OUT Tied 63-63 with 5:17 remaining, McMurry failed to regain an earlier lead as Howard Payne defeated the War Hawks in Brownwood, 77-66. HPU went on a 13-3 run to end the contest. The War Hawks did have two players with double-doubles despite the loss, as Skyler Reyna and Destiny Mathews combined for 40 points and 20 rebounds.

SCOUTING THE EAGLES After opening the season 5-5 in November and December, the Ozarks have yet to find a win in January and February. The Eagles have lost 13 straight games and own an 0-14 record in American Southwest Conference play. They are led by sophomore Jerigan Bradshaw at 11.4 points per game and junior Kamryn McKinney at 10.1 PPG. UO also leads the ASC in free throw shooting at 74.0 percent.

SERIES HISTORY VS. OZARKS – McMurry leads the all-time series, 12-8. Ozarks has won three of the last four, including the last two in Clarksville. McMurry's last win versus UO came in the 2017-18 season. On Thursday, McMurry will seek its first road win over Ozarks since 2011.

SCOUTING THE COMETS Much the opposite of Ozarks, UT Dallas carries a 10-game win streak into the week. The Comets own a 19-4 record overall and a 13-1 record in conference games, with the only loss coming against East Texas Baptist on Jan. 9. UTD also owns the league's best scoring margin at +15.7 and are led by the ASC's top scorer, Raenett Hughes, at 20.8 PPG. Victoria Pena is another threat, averaging 13.4 PPG to rank just outside the ASC's Top 10 scorers.

SERIES HISTORY VS. UTD – McMurry leads the all-time series with a 17-8 record, starting the series on a 13-game win streak from the 1998-99 season until the 2007-08 season.  UT Dallas currently owns a four-game winning streak over the War Hawks, with McMurry's last win coming during the 2015-16 season – the first season under Coach Brittany Densman-Roes. The team's last played in the first round of the ASC Championships in Feb. 2019, as UTD won 80-64. McMurry's last win in Richardson came in 2011.

WINNING THE BOARDS – The War Hawks have been powered by strong rebounding this season, ranking atop the ASC all season until UT Dallas passed them this past weekend. McMurry pulls in 44.1 rebounds per contest, while Skyler Reyna remains atop the ASC with 9.9 rebounds per game.

THE 900 REBOUND MILESTONE – A four-year standout for McMurry, senior Skyler Reyna ranks second on the all-time career rebound list at 917. She is only the second player in McMurry Women's Basketball history to reach the 900 milestone, joining McM Hall of Honor member Tarra Richardson who has over 1,000.

REYNA RECORD WATCH – Reyna has 1,412 career points to rank fourth on the all-time list. This past Saturday, Reyna passed Tina Beal (1983-87) for fourth, who finished with 1,360 points in her career. Reyna needs 21 points to move into third place all-time with Kristi Risinger (1991-94).

MATHEWS MAGIC – Freshman Destiny Mathews has been a big part of McMurry's production all season, averaging 13.1 points and 8.5 rebounds per game. She has seven double-doubles this season and has fallen one rebound short of five more.

YOUTH MOVEMENT – McMurry has 13 freshmen and one junior transfer on the 2019-20 roster, joining the returning senior duo of Sarah Doherty and Skyler Reyna. The average age of the team is 19.25 years old.
