War Hawks return home for first time in 2019

 
ABILENE, Texas -  McMurry University women's basketball will return home after four-straight road games, hosting Sul Ross State University and Howard Payne University. The War Hawks (5-12, 2-6 ASC) and Lobos tipoff at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday (Jan. 17), while McM and the Yellow Jackets hit the court at 1 p.m. on Saturday (Jan. 19).
 
McMurry split its pair of games last week.  Last Thursday (Jan. 10), the War Hawks won a 70-69 overtime thriller at Concordia-Texas behind a season-high 21 points from Skyler Reyna. Reyna also grabbed 13 boards for her ninth double-double of the year. Sarah Doherty had 13 points in the win over the Tornados. In the Saturday setback to the #7/#9 UMHB team, Doherty paced McM's offense with 17 points on an 8-for-14 shooting day from the field.

SCOUTING SUL ROSS STATE:  The Lobos (4-12, 2-5 ASC) enter the game versus McMurry on a seven-game losing streak. SRSU is coming off of an 80-69 setback at Howard Payne University last Saturday in its ASC West opener. Chandre Nunez leads Sul Ross and is the only player averaging in double-digit scoring, at 14.5 points per game.
 
LAST TIME OUT VERSUS THE LOBOS:  Last season, McM swept the season series versus SRSU, winning in Alpine, 74-54, and again in Abilene, 80-42. On the War Hawks' home floor, Skyler Reyna had a double-double of 20 points and 19 rebounds to lead McMurry. Reyna also did well in Lobo-land, tallying 22 points and 14 rebounds.
 
SCOUTING HOWARD PAYNE:  The Yellow Jackets enter the week with a record of 5-11 overall and 2-5 in ASC play (with a bout at Hardin-Simmons prior to its appearance at Kimbrell Arena). The Yellow Jackets are coming off of an 80-69 victory in Brownwood over Sul Ross State last Saturday. Freshman guard Lily Janek is the reigning ASC West Player of the Week after a season-high 27 points in the Lady Jackets' 80-69 victory over SRSU. She was 7-of-14 from the field, 5-of-9 from behind the arc and 8-of-10 at the free throw line, while grabbing four rebounds and dishing out three assists versus the Lobos. On the year, Chelsey Harris leads HPU at 15.3 p.p.g., with Anastasia Willis averaging 6.3 rebounds per contest.
 
LAST TIME OUT VERSUS THE YELLOW JACKETS: Last season, the teams split the par of meetings, with each school winning on its home floor. HPU won in Brownwood, 75-62, before the War Hawks got revenge with their 70-69 victory in Abilene. Sham Hunter's (16 points) driving layup with 1.9 seconds left provided the difference at Kimbrell Arena. Skyler Reyna had 13 points and 16 rebounds, while London Weilert added 10 points.
 
A VERY SPECIAL TIME: At halftime of both the women's and men's games on Saturday versus HPU, area Special Olympics athletes will be playing games.
 
WORKING OVERTIME: The back-to-back overtime games versus LeTourneau (Jan. 5) and Concordia (Jan. 10), were the first for the War Hawks this season. McM split the contests, losing at LETU (79-75) and topping CTX (70-69).
 
EYES TO "THE SKY": McMurry University junior forward Skyler Reyna has hit several career milestones already in 2018-19, including:

BALANCING ACT: 
In all, McM has a total of seven players averaging better than 5.0 points per game this season.

SHOOTING STAR: Freshman Savannah Johnson is shooting a team-leading .484 (61-126) in her first collegiate campaign.
 
JOHNSON & JOHNSON:  Twin sisters Savanah Johnson and Autumn Johnson are averaging a combined 12.1 points and 5.7 rebounds per game for the War Hawks.
 
SEEING DOUBLE-DOUBLE: Skyler Reyna has 9 double-double games, thus far, in 2018-19. In her career, Reyna has 28 double-double games.
 
CARRY ON, CARRION: Junior guard Isabel Carrion leads McM in assists, averaging 3.1 "helps" per contest. She also contributes 5.6 points and 3.6 rebounds per game. Carrion matched her single-game career-high with eight assists versus Covenant (12/29/18).
 
AMONG THE ASC LEADERS: Individually, several War Hawks rank among the ASC statistical leaders: Scoring- Reyna (13th/12.5 ppg), Doherty (t.25th/9.9 ppg), S. Johnson (28th/9.5 ppg); Rebounds- 2nd/9.5 rpg); Field Goal %- S. Johnson (8th/.484); Assists- Carrion (11th/3.1); Free Throw %- Reyna (14th/.719); 3-Point Field Goal %- Machuca (t.15th/.333); 3-Point Field Goals Made- Machuca (11th/1.5 pg), Doherty (t.15th/1.3 pg); Blocked Shots- Doherty (9th/0.9 pg); Assist/Turnover Ratio- Carrion (8th/+1.3 pg). 
 
NEXT WEEK FOR McM: The War Hawks will travel across town on Saturday, January 26 to face Hardin-Simmons University. Tip-off is slated for 1 p.m. at the Mabee Complex.
