RICHARDSON, Texas - After playing just one game in the past 20 days, the McMurry University women's basketball team will have a pair of contests this weekend as it participates in the University of Texas-Dallas/Courtyard Classic on Friday and Saturday. On Friday (Dec. 28/1 p.m.), the War Hawks (2-9) will face Manchester (Ind.) University, before taking on Covenant (Ga.) College on Saturday (Dec. 29/3 p.m.).
McM's last outing was a 78-51 loss at home to nationally-ranked UT-Dallas. In that game, three War Hawks tallied in double figures:
Skyler Reyna (14),
Sarah Doherty (13) and
London Weilert (10). Reyna pulled down 10 rebounds versus the Comets.
NOTES
THE UTD DALLAS COURTYARD CLASSIC: The tourney will feature six total teams, including three American Southwest Conference schools – host UT Dallas, Concordia University-Texas and McMurry – and Berry University (Southern Athletic Association), Covenant College (USA Southern Athletic Conference) and Manchester University (Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference). SCOUTING THE SPARTANS: Manchester enters the weekend with a 2-7 record, having lost five consecutive games (after back-to-back wins over Muskingum and Kalamazoo). MU is led by Faith-Alexis Graham and Nicole Weaver, averaging 8.6 and 8.2 points per game, respectively. Beth Schaefer tops the Spartan rebounders at 6.3 per game. Graham gives off an average of 3.1 assists per game, as well.
SCOUTING THE SCOTS: Covenant is 2-7 overall and coming off a conference loss at Berea, heading into the weekend (CC has a date with UTD on Friday, prior to facing McM on Saturday). The Scots' wins have come over Sewanee and Webster. Covenant is led by Joanna Smith (13.0 points and 7.3 rebounds per game) and Kaley Hallmark (12/.4 points, 3.9 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 3.1 steals per game).
FIRST-TIME FOES: When the War Hawks face Manchester and Covenant, it will be the first time playing either school in women's basketball history.
GLASS CLEANER: McM junior
Skyler Reyna pulled down the 500th rebound of her career on December 3 at Ozarks. In her career, she now has 524 rebounds.
BIG SKY COUNTRY: Thus far in 2018-19,
Skyler Reyna notched her 800th career point on December 20 versus UT-Dallas, as well as her 700th career point at Houston Baptist (Nov. 11). She currently sits at 810 total career points.
SHOOTING STAR: Freshman
Savannah Johnson is shooting a blistering .528 (38-72) in her first collegiate campaign, appearing in all 11 contests.
LONDON CALLING: Junior guard
London Weilert has hit nearly 82 percent of her free throws (18-22).
SEEING DOUBLE-DOUBLE: Skyler Reyna has 5 double-double games, thus far, in 2018-19. In her career, Reyna has 23 double-double games.
CARRY ON, CARRION: Junior guard
Isabel Carrion leads McM in assists, averaging 3.2 "helps" per contest. She also contributes 5.5 points and 3.9 rebounds per game.
