Box Score BEAUMONT, Texas – The McMurry University women's basketball team lost an exhibition road contest at NCAA Division I - and defending Southland Conference champion - Lamar University, 100-37, at the Montagne Center. The win over the NCAA Division III War Hawks (0-1) by the Cardinals (2-0) – which is counting the game on their schedule – was the 29th-consecutive victory for LU on its home floor.
Lamar was also the unanimous pre-season favorite to win 2018-19 Southland Conference championship. The Cardinals received votes for the Mid-Major top-25 ranking.
The height differential between the two squads was a foreshadowing of the lopsided result. The Cardinals sported a roster with eight players at 5'9" or better, while McM had just two (one 5'9" and one 5'10"). Lamar had a total of four players topping the 6'0" mark, making inside points a premium for the War Hawks.
Lamar built a 23-11 lead after the first quarter and upped that margin to 48-19 by halftime. The Cardinals shot 47 percent (18-38) from the field and 89 percent (8-9) from the free throw line in the first 20 minutes of the game.
The second half produced a similar result as the War Hawks struggled with Lamar's suffocating press. McM tallied its first point of the second half at the 6:11 mark of the third quarter on a free throw by
Brittany Rodgers. McMurry trailed 75-27 after that third segment.
Junior
London Weilert led all War Hawks scorers with 11 points. Weilert was 4-of-10 from the floor, 1-for-3 from beyond the arc and 2-of-4 on free throws. She also had three rebounds.
The sophomore transfer Rodgers added 10 points as the only other McM player in double-figure scoring. Rodgers was just 2-of-5 from the field, but converted 6-of-8 from the charity stripe. She also pulled down three boards.
Other scorers included four points from
Isabel Carrion, three each from
Savannah Johnson and
Skyler Reyna, and two points apiece from
Lynzey Tucker,
Chyna Washington and
Dominique Machuca.
Carrion had the War Hawks only two assists, while Reyna topped the team with six rebounds.
McMurry will travel up the road to face another Division I foe – Houston Baptist University – on Sunday, with a 4 p.m. tipoff.
