ABILENE, Texas – McMurry University's women's tennis team notched its first win of the 2017 season by defeating Concordia University-Texas, 8-1, at the Seidel-Swagerty Tennis Center. The War Hawks improved to 1-4 overall after blowing by the Tornados (1-3).
McM staked itself to a comfortable cushion in the team score by sweeping all three doubles matches. At No. 1 doubles, the tandem of Samantha Ritz and Bree Brosig won 8-6. At No. 2, the War Hawks' tandem of seniors Chloe Patterson and Gabby Camacho were victorious (8-1), while Zayra Gomez and Neah Garza took the No. 3 doubles match (8-6).
The War Hawks would also win five of six singles contests, as well. At the Nos. 1-3 matches, head coach
Mark Hathorn received straight-set wins from Patterson, Brosig and Ritz, respectively. Patterson won 7-5, 6-0 and Brosig 6-2, 6-4, with Ritz battling to a 7-6 (7-3), 6-3 win.
At No. 4 singles, Gomez split sets with CUTX's Hayley Anderson, but still took the win. After dropping set one 6-3, Gomez came back to win set two 7-5 and the set three pro set, 10-7.
Camacho lost a tough three-set decision at No. 5 singles to Camille Kempf (6-3, 4-6, 10-7). At No. 6 singles, sophomore Symphony Munoz defeated the Tornados' Derena Segel, 7-6 (7-3), 6-2.
