ABILENE, Texas – McMurry University's women's basketball team extracted a measure of revenge on crosstown rival Hardin-Simmons University, winning 63-58 at Kimbrell Arena. The War Hawks (8-14, 4-10 ASC) had lost to the Cowgirls (8-14, 4-10 ASC) earlier this season.
Senior guard
Haley Welch provided the spark for her team with 17 points. Welch made a living from the free throw line, connecting on 11-of-14.
Sham Hunter registered her sixth double-double of the season. The junior tallied 13 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. She also had three assists and made a game-high seven steals.
Freshman forward
Skyler Reyna also had 13 points, hitting 5-of-19 from the field. Reyna pulled down eight boards and made three steals.
As a team, the War Hawks had 15 thefts.
Freshman guard
Isabel Carrion had eight points and a team-leading four assists. Freshman
Madison Davis came off of the McM bench to score seven points and snare nine caroms.
Neither team was able to create any distance in the first half, with six points serving as the largest lead by either team. HSU took a 30-27 advantage into the halftime locker room.
In the third quarter, the game was still tight, with the War Hawks clinging to a 37-35 lead with 5:10 left in the third quarter. McMurry would close out the stanza on an 11-2 run to go ahead, 48-37, heading into the final quarter.
But the Cowgirls refused to go away, chipping away at McM's lead during the final quarter. With less than two minutes left to play, HSU was within two points, 56-54, and was still just a basket down with 26 seconds remaining after a Kourtney Holyfield basket, 60-58.
McMurry's defense did not permit any more Cowgirl points the rest of the way. For its part, McM converted 3-of-4 free throws down the stretch for the final 63-58 score.
