TYLER, Texas - McMurry University's volleyball team lost a pair of matches to nationally-recognized teams, falling to East Texas Baptist University and UT-Dallas by identical 3-0 match scores.
The losses left the War Hawks with an 11-7 season record.
Versus ETBU - which received votes in last week's American Volleyball Coaches Association poll - McMurry was shutout by set scores of 25-15, 25-19, 25-17. The loss snapped a three-match McM win skein.
Junior
Katy Headrick led the team with seven kills and also had a total of three blocks. Headrick had six digs, as well. Senior
Catherine Heath contributed six kills.
Bethany Holub had five kills and
Jessica Cory four, as the War Hawks were limited to a .052 attack percentage.
Freshman libero
Odalis Rodriguez had a match-leading 19 digs and one service ace. Senior setter
Morgan Thomas added six digs and had 16 assists.
Lauren Heathcote also had three of McM's seven blocks as a team.
In the evening match against No. 20-ranked UT-Dallas, McMurry came out fast and led the Comets, 5-0, with Holub serving. However, UTD got its wake-up call and tied the set at 6-6. The match was still tied at 11-11, when the Comets streaked out on an 11-2 run to lead, 22-13 and the eventual 25-17 set one victory.
The Comets led wire-to-wire in both set Nos. 2 and 3 (25-15, 25-17) to secure the match victory.
Heath had a match-high 12 kills, the lone layer in double-figure kill totals for the War Hawks. Cory7 added six kills and five digs, while Headrick and
Elisha Libhart had four kills, apiece.
Thomas had 23 of her McMurry's 33 assists in the match. Holub and
Jessica Tennis had eight and seven digs, respectively.
McMurry will close out play in the ASC Crossover Tournament on Saturday, taking on Belhaven University at 3 p.m.
