War Hawks Can't Solve Newman in Series-Deciding Game

Box Score ABILENE, Texas – McMurry University's baseball team dropped the rubber game of its three-game Heartland Conference opening series versus Newman University, falling by a score of 4-0 on Saturday at Walt Driggers Field.

Jets' pitcher Zak Mickens was dominating versus the War Hawks (3-9, 1-2 HC). Mickens tossed a nine inning complete-game, one-hit shutout at McM. He struck out eight and walked just two, facing just three batters above the minimum and improving his personal record to 2-1 on the year.

McMurry started Ben Bates absorbed the loss. Bates, 0-1 on the year, went 4 2/3 innings and gave up five of Newman's nine hits on the afternoon. He gave up two earned runs, while also struggling a bit with his control by issuing four walks and hitting one batter.

Trevor Ragsdale pitched one inning of relief and Jesus Vasquez went 3 1/3 frames. Ragsdale and Vasquez each gave up one run during their respective stints.

McMurry's lone hit came in the bottom of the third inning when Kyle Sargent slapped a leadoff single, starting what proved to be the War Hawks best offensive threat of the day. With Nick Marsh at the plate, Sargent went to second on a wild pitch and Marsh would draw a walk to put two men on with no out.  However, A.J. Dupre hit into a double play and Zack Hagan struck out swinging to end the threat.

McMurry returns to action this coming Tuesday (Feb. 25/2 p.m.) for a non-conference doubleheader versus Cameron University.
