CLEBURNE, TX - The McMurry War Hawks faced off against LeTourneau on May 3 in an SCAC Tournament elimination game at La Moderna Field in Cleburne, Texas. The final score was 9-7 in favor of LeTourneau.
Both teams remained scoreless through the first two innings of play.
McMurry struck first with a massive top of the third inning. With the bases loaded,
Collin Bruning was hit by a pitch, bringing
Beckham Paul across the plate for the first run of the game.
Dru Ohmstede followed up with a single to center field to score
Tatum Black and
Kaden Buske. Shortly after,
Scout Smith reached base on a fielding error by the second baseman, allowing Bruning to score and giving the War Hawks a 4-0 lead.
LeTourneau responded in the bottom of the third inning with a two-run double, and an RBI single, narrowing the McMurry lead to 4-3.
The War Hawks extended their lead in the top of the fourth.
Tatum Black laid down a bunt single to advance
Beckham Paul, and
Collin Bruning subsequently singled to center field to bring both runners home, pushing the score to 6-3.
LeTourneau tied the game in the bottom of the fifth on a three-run homer to left field.
McMurry reclaimed the lead in the top of the sixth.
Beckham Paul reached on an error, stole third base, and was brought home by an RBI single to right field from
Tatum Black, making the score 7-6.
However, LeTourneau answered back in the bottom of the sixth with a two-run single up the middle, taking their first lead of the game at 8-7.
LeTourneau added an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth on an RBI single to an insurance run.
McMurry was unable to close the gap in the top of the ninth inning.
Top Performers
- Collin Bruning: Delivered crucial hits when it mattered most, recording three RBIs and scoring a run while going 1-for-1 at the plate.
- Tatum Black: Went 2-for-4, scored two runs, and provided a key RBI single in the sixth inning.
- Beckham Paul: Was a constant scoring threat, crossing the plate three times while going 1-for-3 with a walk and a stolen base.
- Dru Ohmstede: Jump-started the offense early, driving in two runs with a key single during the four-run third inning.
