ABILENE, Texas – McMurry University's women's basketball team pushed St. Mary's University – the No. 5 team in the Heartland Conference - early, but could not hold on in suffering a 67-56 defeat at home. The loss dropped the War Hawks to 3-20 overall and 3-14 in league, while the Rattlers improved to 16-8 on the year and 11-7 in the HC.
McM and SMU sparred gamely during the first 20-minute segment. The opening stanza featured no less than eight ties and seven lead changes, with the War Hawks leading by as much as seven points – 32-25 – after a layup by
Adijatu Disu at the 1:42 mark. McM would eventually settle on a 32-30 cushion heading into the locker room.
But the Rattlers would begin to exert themselves in the second half of play. With McM ahead by a single point, 36-35, with 17:55 left, SMU would score six unanswered points to pull ahead, 41-36, over the next three minutes.
SMU's lead stayed within five points for the better part of the half. The War Hawks clawed to within a single point on four occasions, the last of which came at the 3:45 mark on an
Ana Dominguez that cut it to 57-56. However, in the waning minutes, McM had to foul and the Rattlers were able to pad their point total from the free throw stripe.
Senior
Keshia Collins topped the McM scoring with 15 points, while also grabbing a game-leading eight rebounds. She also lead either team with four assists and two blocks, along with a pair of steals.
With the eight boards, Collins moved up to the No. 3 slot on McMurry's all-time list with 667 rebounds.
Dominguez had a nice night shooting, hitting 6-of-10 for 12 points. Dominguez also had two blocks to her credit.
Sophomore
Sierra Maykus came off the bench to tally 11 points as the final War Hawks in double figures. Maykus connected on 4-of-7 from the floor, 3-of-5 from beyond the arc.
Tessa Ramirez had six points, while Disu and
Tineka Lawson each added four points.
Taylor Russell and
Angela Snow had two points each. Disu pulled down six rebounds and Russell five.
The War Hawks will play their final home game on Saturday (1 p.m.) versus Texas A&M International University. McM's three seniors – Collins,
Jaryn Koenig and
Tory Salazar – will be honored between the women's and men's game that day.
