McM Drops Doubleheader to WTMU

ABILENE, Texas – McMurry University dropped both ends of its home doubleheader versus West Texas A&M University by scores of 5-0 and 6-1. The two teams will square off again on Saturday at 1 p.m. in another non-conference twinbill at Walt Driggers Field.

In the seven-inning first game, junior transfer Lanny Zier (0-2) was the losing pitcher. Zier went six innings, not giving up a run until his final frame of work. He had two walks and three strikeouts, permitting five of the six hits acquired by the Buffs.

WTAMU righthander Dylan James got the win for the Buffs with the complete, game three-hit, shutout. James walked one and struck out eight War Hawks.

Jeffers Rader, Erik Moritz and Nick Marsh had McM's hits. Moritz slapped a double as his team's only extra-base hit of the game.

In game No. 2, McMurry starterJoel DePorte (1-1) absorbed the loss and was chased after 2 2/3 innings. DePorte gave up eight hits (of WTAMU's 12) and five runs, four earned, during his stint.

Trevor Daggon allowed three hits and one earned run over five innings in relief of DePorte.  Jacob Foitek went the final1 1/3 frames with scoreless, one-hit relief.

No War Hawk was able to collect more than one hit in game two either. Marsh's double was the team's only one of the extra-base variety. Three of McM's hits came from its bench off the bats of Zack Hagan, AJ Dupre and Chad Hayes.

WTAMU starter Scott Cone (1-0) was dominating over his seven innings of work. Cone allowed four hits and one earned run, while booking 10 strikeouts without a walk.
