Box Score 2 SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The McMurry University baseball team found itself on both sides of a blowout as it split a double header with No. 9 St. Mary's University. The War Hawks took game one, 10-2, before falling in game two, 10-0.
In game one, the War Hawks came out swinging and notched 10+ runs for the third time in four games as they won the first game, 10-2. McM got on the board first in the top of the third on RBI by
Eric Moritz,
Ruben Zendejas and
Casey Berryman to take a 3-0 lead.
After
Chase Moreland shut down the Rattlers in the bottom of the third, McM struck for four more runs in the top of the fourth inning. The first run of the inning was driven in by
Jordan Kennedy with run number two coming off the bat of Moritz.
Dylan De Leon then knocked in Kennedy and Mortiz scored on an error by the Rattlers' first baseman to make the score 7-0.
After St. Mary's scored a run in the bottom of the fourth, McMurry responded with three more runs in the top of the fifth. Mortiz drove in two more runs with a RBI double and Zendejas added his second RBI of the game on a sacrifice fly, scoring Kennedy to extend the advantage to 10-1. St. Mary's would add one more run in the game, but would get no closer as the War Hawks took game one, 10-2.
Moritz led the way offensively in game one, going three-for-four with four RBI. Zendejas added two RBI while De Leon and Berryman drove in a run apiece.
On the mound,
Chase Moreland picked up his third win of the year, pitching 6.2 innings while allowing seven hits and two earned while striking out six.
In game two the shoe was on the other foot, as the War Hawks dropped the game 10-0. Rattlers pitcher Matt McClain outfielder Derek Moczygemba did most of the damage to the Wat Hawks, as McClain struck out 14 McMurry batters while giving up just one hit, and Moczygemba totaled five RBI in the game.
With the victory in game one, the War Hawks guaranteed themselves at least a season split with the country's number nine team, and they now have a 12-8 record against teams that are slated for the Heartland Conference Championship Tournament.
McM will complete its season tomorrow when it takes on the Rattlers in a nine-inning contest, scheduled for 1 p.m.
