Box Score 2 Wichita, Kansas – The McMurry baseball team saw its losing streak stretch to four games as it was defeated in both games of a double header by Newman University on Friday. The War Hawks lost the first game, 7-2, before dropping game two, 8-4.
Despite having 10 hits in game one, the War Hawks left nine batters on base in a 7-2 loss.
Newman got on the board first, getting to pitcher
Spencer Smith for three runs in the bottom of the inning to take the 3-0 lead.
The War Hawks would then cut the lead to 3-2 on runs in the top of the second and third innings.
Ricky Garcia singled in
Greg Koll in the second, and Jon Mejia took the first pitch of the third inning over the left field wall to cut the Jets lead to one.
In the bottom of the fourth, Newman struck for three more runs, with the big blow coming on a two-out, two-RBI double by Jarrod Flax, to expand the lead to 6-2. They would then add one more run in the bottom of the sixth, to round out the scoring, 7-2.
Offensively for the War Hawks in game one, Mejia led the way with three hits and a RBI while
Jeremy Ruiz and Garcia notched two hits apiece.
In game two, things did not get much better as the War Hawks gave up seven runs over the first three innings and fell, 8-4.
The Jets got to starting pitcher
Chase Moreland early in the game striking for two runs in the bottom of the second and five runs in the bottom of the third. Moreland finished the day giving up six earned on seven hits while striking out two.
The War Hawks got a run back in the top of the fourth on Mejia's second home run of the afternoon, but that run was quickly countered in the bottom of the fifth, to extend the deficit to 8-1.
McM mustered three more runs, which included and RBI each from
Zack Hagan and Garcia, but could get no closer and fell, 8-4.
Offensively, four different War Hawks total two hits in the second contest. Mejia, and
Nick Marsh went 2-for-4 while Koll went 2-for-3 and Hagan, 2-for-5.
On the mound,
Charlie Hejny pitched well, pitching five innings of relief while allowing just three hits and an earned run, while striking out three.
McM and Newman will continue the three-game series on Saturday when they will play a nine-inning contest to complete the series. The game is scheduled for a noon start.
