ABILENE, Texas – The McMurry baseball team will look to continue to improve after taking a three-game series over Texas A&M International when it hosts Tarleton State University on Tuesday.
Last weekend, the War Hawks took two games from TAMIU winning games one and three by scores of 8-5 and 3-2. The team lost game two, 4-2, but took the series from the Dustdevils, 2-1.
In the series against TAMIU, the War Hawks used timely hitting, as well as solid pitching from top to bottom to come away with the series win.
Eric Moritz and Jon Mejia each collected five hits in the series, while Moritz drove in three RBIs and Mejia notched two.
On the mound, the starting rotation of
Spencer Smith,
Aaron Burns and
Chase Moreland allowed just seven earned runs through the three games.
Jared Hopper also pitched well out of the pen collecting a win and a save while not allowing a hit in two appearances.
Tarleton State comes into the contest having won four straight contests in the city of Abilene over the past week. Playing all games at Abilene Christian, the Texans defeated ACU (15-5), Cameron (9-6), Eastern New Mexico (7-5) and Bellarmine (10-7). In the Texans most recent win over Bellarmine, the TSU 1-6 hitters collected two hits each and were led by two RBI games from Ryan Small and Matt Olive.
So far this season, the War Hawks are being led offensively by Moritz who is currently hitting .389 on the season with a team-best, .488 on base percentage.
Dylan De Leon (.362),
Zack Hagan (.333) and Mejia (.327) are also all hitting over the .300 mark, with Mejia leading the team in RBIs with eight.
On the mound, Smith continues to produce great numbers. Through four starts, Smith is holding opponents to just a .191 batting average and has allowed just 31 baserunners in 32.0 innings of work. He currently boasts a 2-0 record with a 1.97 ERA.
Offensively for the Texans, Matt Olive and Alvaro Moreno are leading the way as each are hitting over .400. Olive is currently batting .455 while Moreno is hitting .414 with a team-high, 29 hits and 18 RBIs.
On the mound, the TSU pitching staff is currently boasting a 3.45 team ERA. Matt Buckmaster is the ace of the Texans' staff, as he currently boasts a .92 ERA and a 3-1 record. Through 29.1 innings, Buckmaster has recorded more strikeouts than baserunners (28 Ks/27 baserunners).
