McM Baseball Splits With OPSU

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 GOODWELL, Okla. – The McMurry University baseball program split a double header with Oklahoma Panhandle State University on Friday afternoon. The War Hawks lost the first contest, 8-0, before taking game two by a score of 4-2.

In game one, the War Hawks managed just four hits in the game as they were shut out, 8-0. Spencer Smith was saddled with the loss as he allowed nine hits and six earned runs over four innings of play. He also struck out five batters. Nick Marsh led the way offensively for the War Hawks, reaching base in both of his at bats.

In game two, the War Hawks righted the ship, holding the Aggies to five total hits over nine innings on route to a 4-2 victory.

OPSU got on the board first in the bottom of the fourth inning as they hit three singles to notch the first run of the contest and take the 1-0 lead.

McM would come right back in the top of the fifth inning. After Jeremy Ruiz led the inning off with a single, he was moved to third on an error by the Aggies' first baseman. The next batter was Ricky Garcia, who drove in Ruiz with a sacrifice fly to make the score 1-1.

In the top of the eighth inning, the War Hawks would strike again, scoring three runs, all with two outs. With Eric Moritz on first base and two outs, McM strung together three-straight doubles, as Dylan De Leon, Jon Mejia and Cody Howard all drove in a run in the inning, making the score 4-1.
Jared Hopper came in the bottom of the eighth and sealed the deal, giving up just one, unearned run, to earn his second save of the season and preserve the 4-2 victory.

On the mound, Chase Moreland picked up his first victory of the season as he went seven strong, allowing just three hits and one earned run while striking out eight Aggies.

McM and OPSU will play the rubber match in the three-game series when they will meet for a nine-inning contest on Saturday. The contest is scheduled to begin at noon.
