Box Score 2 ABILENE, Texas – A walk-off, winning hit by
Zack Hagan highlighted the action as the McMurry baseball team earned a split with West Texas A&M University on Monday afternoon at Walt Driggers Field. The War Hawks dropped the first contest, 6-0, before coming back to win game two, 6-5.
In game one, the War Hawks offense was held in check as the combination of Ryan Houston and Paul Pulley held McM to just two hits throughout the game. The hits were collected by Hagan and
Dylan De Leon in the contest.
Starter
Aaron Burns battled well with the Buffaloes as he held WTAMU to just two runs over the first six innings of the contest. However, in the top of the seventh, the Buffs struck for four runs to blow the game wide open and take the contest, 6-0.
In game two, the War Hawks used any means necessary, collecting six runs on just six hits during the contest in the 6-5 victory.
West Texas A&M got on the board first in the top of the first inning on a sacrifice fly, to go up 1-0.
McMurry would counter in the bottom of the third inning, striking for five runs in the frame.
Ricky Garcia picked up the first hit of the game on a bunt single to open the inning. After Adam Neubaur was hit by a pitch,
AJ Dupre reached base on a fielder's choice. On the play, a planned sacrifice bunt, the Buffaloes' pitcher attempted to get Garcia at third, but great hustle allowed all runners to be safe on the play.
With the bases loaded and no one out,
Eric Moritz drove in the game-tying run by getting hit by a pitch.
Zack Hagan then stepped to the plate with the bases loaded and delivered a two-RBI double into left-center to give McM the 3-1 lead. Two batters later,
Cody Howard knocked in another run on a ground out and was followed by an RBI single by
Jeremy Ruiz to expand the War Hawks advantage to 5-1.
In the top of the fourth, West Texas A&M would respond by scoring two in the frame to cut the lead to 5-3. Two innings later, in the top of the sixth, the Buffaloes would strike for two more off of starter,
Caleb Gonzales, to knot the game at 5-5.
Neither team could break the tie in their next at bats as WTAMU's Billy Gonzales and McMurry's
Jared Hopper would trade scoreless frames. In the bottom of the seventh, however, the tie would be broken by the War Hawks.
AJ Dupre led off the bottom of the seventh with a full-count, single through the right side of the infield with no one out. A coaching decision by
John Byington replaced Dupre with
Ruben Zendejas, and Zendejas quickly moved into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt by
Eric Moritz. The next batter was Hagan, who took the first pitch he saw into right-center field, scoring Zendejas to give McMurry its first walk-off victory of the season, 6-5.
Offensively, Hagan was the biggest key for McMurry today as he went 3-for-6 in the double-header with three RBIs and a run scored. In game two,
Ricky Garcia also added two hits while Dupre and Ruiz gathered a hit each.
McM will be back in action on Friday and Saturday, March 15 and 16 when they host Heartland Conference foe, St. Mary's University. Double header action on Friday is scheduled for a three p.m. start.
