ABILENE, Texas – McMurry University's women's basketball team will play its final two games of the 2012-13 regular season at home, beginning with this Thursday's match-up versus Newman University. The Jets (10-14) will be making their first-ever appearance at Kimbrell Arena, with tip-off slated for 5:30 p.m. versus the War Hawks (10-13).
The game is the front end of a women's-men's doubleheader versus NU, with the men to follow at 7:30 p.m. Both of McM's teams will also host Arkansas-Fort Smith on Saturday (2 p.m./4 p.m.) to close out the regular season, before awaiting pairings for next week's National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) Central Region tournament.
Newman defeated McMurry, 63-62, on a last-second basket back on November 29 in Wichita, Kansas. The contest was McMurry's first-ever game versus another member of the Heartland Conference.
In that inaugural meeting between the programs, McMurry junior forward
Keshia Collins led all scorers with 25 points and also grabbed 11 rebounds. Collins hit 11-of-20 from the field, while also making a game-leading five steals.
Freshman
Ana Dominguez, since sidelined by a foot injury, was the only other War Hawk in double-digit scoring – and matching Collins with a “double-double” – with 15 points and 12 rebounds. Dominguez also blocked three shots.
Alexandra Ciabattoni hit the game-winning jumper and also paced the Jets' offense with 18 points. Ciabattoni made her game a “double-double” as well, pulling down 11 boards.
NU's Cheniqwa Banks added 17 points, along with 11 from Kianna Flannagan.
NU has won four of its last five outings, including a 58-52 win over UA-Fort Smith last Saturday. Its lone loss in the span was a 69-54 setback at the hands of Heartland regular season champ UT-Permian Basin on Feb. 16.
Ciabottoni leads the Jets' scoring at 13.6 points per game for 23 appearances. She also averages 8.0 rebounds per game, as well.
Flannagan also averages in double figures for the year at 12.5 p.p.g., while grabbing 4.4 rebounds per game. Chynna Ramelb and Banks contribute 7.8 and 7.5 p.p.g., respectively.
McMurry has not won – nor has it lost – more than two-consecutive games since back-to-back wins on Dec. 1 and 8. Coming off of a 64-40 loss at UTPB last Saturday, the War Hawks would like nothing more than to pick up some momentum heading into the NCCAA tourney.
Collins' 13.5 p.p.g. average leads the team's scoring. Collins is a 38-pewrcent shooter from the field, but leads the regulars from the free throw stripe with an 80.4-percent (78-97) mark. She leads the Heartland in steals (2.8 s.p.g.), while also averaging 6.5 r.p.g. She has also blocked 21 shots.
Rikeita Thomas has raised her scoring average to 9.8 p.p.g. from the point position.
Jamie Wilson is at 5.4 p.p.g. and
Claire Bruffey at 5.3 p.p.g. to top round out McM's offense.
