Box Score 2 LUBBOCK, Texas – It was a day of season-highs when the McMurry baseball team took on Lubbock Christian in a double header action on Saturday. Over the two games, the programs combined for 38 runs as the two teams split a pair of games, with McM taking the first game, 11-2, before falling in game two, 22-3.
In game one, the War Hawks' bats came alive as they struck for a season-high, 11 runs in the contest. Six different players registered an RBI in the game, led by Jon Mejia's three-RBI day.
McM wasted no time getting on the board as Mejia reached on a fielder's choice which scored
Patrick Adams to give McMurry the 1-0 lead. The Chaps quickly responded in the bottom of the second inning as they got to starter
Spencer Smith for two runs to take the 2-1 advantage.
It was in the bottom of the third that the War Hawks blew the game open, striking for five runs in the frame. McM used three-straight extra base hits to open the inning as
Greg Koll tripled to left center and was followed by a double from
Dylan De Leon and a triple by Jon Mejia, which led to the first two runs. After back-to-back walks to
Jeremy Ruiz and
AJ Dupre loaded the bases, the War Hawks would use small-ball to strike for three more runs, with the last run coming on a sacrifice fly by
Ricky Garcia to make the score 6-2 in favor of McMurry.
McMurry would add two more runs in the top of the fourth on RBIs by Mejia and Dupre before striking for three more in the top of the seventh. After singles from
Greg Koll and De Leon, Ruiz drove in his second run of the game on a single to score Koll. Dupre then singled in De Leon, and was quickly followed on an RBI double by
Eric Preuss to round out the scoring at 11-2.
Offensively, McM was led by Mejia's two-for-five, three RBI day. De Leon also had a nice game, going four-for-five. Dupre, and Koll also had multiple hits on the day, collecting two each.
On the mound, Smith put in his fourth-straight quality start, collecting his second complete game of the season. Smith went seven innings while allowing six hits and two earned while striking out two.
In game two, the offensive explosion did not go in the War Hawks favor, as the Chaps took the second game of the double header, 22-3. In the contest, McM committed seven errors in just seven innings to help lead the Chaps post 22 runs and hand the War Hawks their worst loss of the season.
Offensively in game two,
Eric Moritz and
Zack Hagan combined to go five-of-seven while the rest of the team hit just five-of-23.
The War Hawks and Chaps will play the rubber match of their three-game series on Sunday, February 24. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
