Women's Hoops Sweeps Away Dustdevils, 72-59

ABILENE, Texas – Senior Jamie Wilson tallied a season-high 18 points to lead McMurry's women's basketball team to a 72-59 rout of Texas A&M-International University at Kimbrell Arena. The win upped the War Hawks' record to 9-12 overall, while the Dustdevils fell to 8-15.

McM never trailed in the game and there was just one tie (with 4-4 at the 17:09 mark of the first half). The hosts had a cushion of as much as 22 points in knocking off TAMIU for the second time in as many meetings.

Wilson had a sterling effort across the board for McM head coach Dr. Veronica Snow's team. Wilson was 7-of-10 from the field, 2-for-2 from beyond the arc and 2-for-2 from the free throw stripe. The San Angelo native also grabbed two rebounds and blocked two shots in 26 minutes of court time.

Wilson's efforts were a microcosm of McMurry's entire game, as the team shot 47.3 percent from the field (26-55), including 7-of-19 from three-point range (37 percent).  The War Hawks also had an impressive night from the free throw line, going 13-of-16 (81.3 percent).

McM managed 21 points off turnovers and had 13 second-chance points, also rolling up 17 assists on its 26 field goals made. Tory Salazar and Rikeita Thomas had five and four assists, respectively.

The McMurry defense forced 19 Dustdevil turnovers, resulting in nine team steals. Keshia Collins and Jaryn Koenig each had three thefts for the War Hawks.

In addition to Wilson's, three other McM players managed double-digit point totals. Collins also had an efficient evening, making good on 6-of-9 tries from the field and 3-of-3 free throws, for 15 points. She also grabbed four boards.

Koening was 5-of-7 from the floor and finished the game with a McM career high 13 points. Senior M.J. Vickers had a double-double, pulling down a game-leading 13 rebounds (10 in the first half alone) and season-high 12 points.

Thomas added eight points, Bridget Dorn four and Salazar two to round out the McMurry scoring.

TAMIU managed to stay within striking distance most of the first half, until McMurry closed out the first half on a 10-0 run over the final 2:47 of the period to expand its margin to 34-22 at the intermission.

With 16:26 left to play, McM upped that to 22 points after a three-point play by Collins. The Dustdevils only managed to reduce their deficit to single digits on three possessions the entire second half.

McMurry will try to do something it has not done since December 8 of this season and try to win a second-consecutive game, when it plays host to St. Mary's University (the Heartland Conference's second place team) on Saturday. Tip-off will be at 2 p.m.
