GOODWELL, Okla – The McMurry football team used a big first half and survived a second-half rally to defeat Oklahoma Panhandle State University, 42-33, at Carl Wooten Field. The War Hawks' (2-2) win was the second in a row, while snapping a two-game win skein by the Pioneers (2-2).
It was the teams' first meeting since 1998. McM now leads the series 15-7.
The first half was all War Hawks, as
Jake Mullin threw four touchdown passes to three different receivers. The first was a five-yard completion to
Greg Livingston; the second coming with 4:31 remaining in the first quarter, was a 24-yard connection to
Paxton Grayer. In the second quarter, Mullin threw two more touchdowns. One, a 16-yard hookup with Chris Simpson, and the other a 15-yard pitch-and-catch to Livingston, giving Livingston his second of the half.
Among those first half completions was a 15-yard strike to Livingston at the 12:23 juncture of the second quarter which pushed Mullin's career passing total over 10,000 yards.
In the second half, Grayer ran for a touchdown in the third quarter and Mullin threw his fifth of the contest to
Joshua Chatman in the fourth. Even though the War Hawks were outscored 27-14 in the second-half, the Maroon & Black held on for the 42-33 victory.
Offensively, the War Hawks were led by Mullin who passed for 440 yards and five scores. He completed a pass to 10 different receivers, led by
Eric Shaffer, who caught six balls for 133 yards, and Livingston, who made seven receptions for 96-yards and two scores.
The defense was led by
Ryan Williams, who collected eight total tackles, and
Malique Cage who gathered seven. The War Hawks were a disruptive force in the offensive backfield of the Aggies as they totaled seven tackles for loss and a sack.
