STEPHENVILLE, Texas – McMurry baseball dropped both ends of a non-conference doubleheader at NCAA Division II Tarleton State University. The War Hawks (0-3) lost the opener, 3-1, and fell in the nightcap, 6-2.
David Towler took the loss for McMurry in game one. Towler went three innings of the schedule seven inning contest. He allowed one earned run, walked two and struck out three.
Towler gave was to reliever
Jordan Mattke, who went the next 2 1/3 innings, allowing two unearned runs.
Stephen Greenwood came on to get the final two outs.
The War Hawks managed just three hits, one each by leadoff hitter
Dylan De Leon,
Matt Thompson and
Brian Durst (all who went 1-for-3). Durst collected McM's lone run batted in.
In game two, McMurry found itself down 5-1 after three full innings of the nine inning bout. McM starter
Zach Matthys gave up all five runs, none of which were earned, in his three inning stint as the first of an eventual for War Hawk pitchers.
Andrew Davis went one inning and gave up one earned run. He was followed by
Caleb Gonzales and
Tyler Finchum, who each pitched two complete innings without allowing any runs. Gonzales struck out four and walked one.
Unfortunately, by the time the McM hurlers had restored order, the War Hawks bats were unable to generate any more runs. In the game, shortstop
Kory Moench (2-3) and designated hitter
Andrew Bell (2-4) each had a pair of hits. Bell also scored a run and had a double.
Ruben Zendejas was 1-for-1 with an RBI, as well.
