SEGUIN, Texas – The worst stretch of the season for McMurry University men's basketball – a three-game skid – came to a stop versus the same team that started it, with a 73-72 win at Texas Lutheran University.
The win was even more important for the War Hawks (14-7, 10-7 ASC) because TLU was just behind the McM team (tied for fourth in the ASC West) in the standings. The Bulldogs had also defeated McMurry one week ago, 67-64 in Abilene.
McMurry found itself down by 11 points at the intermission, 44-33, and it looked like the same pitfalls that had befallen the War Hawks in the three previous losses might be at work again. 30 percent shooting and 12 first half turnovers weighed heavily on McM in the opening stanza.
The Bulldogs built their largest lead of the afternoon by tallying the first points of the second half to make it 46-33. McM began to whittle away at the margin and got it to within the high single digits, but began its assault in earnest at the 9:38 mark.
Jaden Isler canned a pair of free throws that started a 7-0 run that got the War Hawks to within a single point, 60-59, when
Steven Jones connected on both ends of a two-shot foul.
TLU pushed its lead back to 65-61, but McM answered right back. Two free throws by
Takoby Jackson with 5:32 left tied the game for the first time and, on its next possession, McMurry got its first lead of the game on a
Bryant Taylor jumper, 67-65.
The two teams swapped baskets – and leads – over the next few minutes. But down the stretch, McMurry freshman
Connor Robinson came up big on both ends of the floor. He scored five of his nine points in the final three minutes.
With the War Hawks down 72-70 with :34 seconds on the game clock, got an offensive rebound off a missed three by
Jaden Isler and made the put-back to knot matters at 72-72.
After a TLU miss with :10 seconds left, Conner not only got the defensive board, but ran the floor and got in position to receive a pass underneath. He was fouled hard going for the layup with just two tics left on the clock.
Robinson missed his first free throw with the game still tied. He then stepped up and calmly centered the second shot to put the War ahead 73-72.
When a desperation three by the Bulldogs Michael Flores glanced off the rim as time expired, McMurry was back in the win column.
Jones led the War Hawks with 18 points and five rebounds. It was his best performance since suffering a head and neck injury early in the last meeting between the teams.
Hill and Isler added 15 and 14 points, respectively.
Dominick Walker pulled down a game-high nine rebounds. Robinson grabbed seven, as well.
