ABILENE, Texas – McMurry University women's basketball team won its second-consecutive game – and third in its last four outings – with a 67-61 non-league win over Wayland Baptist University. The victory improved the War Hawks to 3-6 on the season, while the Flying Queens fell to 7-6 overall.

A back-and-forth first half ended with the War Hawks holding 33-27 cushion. The initial 20-minute segment featured two ties and six lead changes.

Junior Keshia Collins booked seven of her nine points in that first half. Senior guard Rikeita Thomas also had seven points in the opening salvo, where the McM team connected on 12-of-34 field goals (35.3 percent).

McMurry held the upper hand the early part of the second half until WBU mounted a comeback bid. A three-point basket by Angeleigh Davis (17 points) put the Flying Queens on top, 44-43, with 12:40 left to play.

It would be the last time Wayland Baptist would lead in the game, however.

A few seconds later, McM freshman Taylor Russell (4 points) got an offensive rebound and put-back basket to make it 45-44 in favor of the hosts. McMurry would never look back, eventually expanding the advantage to 10 points (66-56) on a Jamie Wilson (7 points/8 rebounds) layup with 1:30 left to play.

Thomas finished the afternoon with a team-leading 15 points, while also dishing off three assists. Thomas was 3-for-4 from beyond the arc, as the McM team went 8-of-15 from long distance.

Tory Salazar added 12 points, eight of which came in the second half alone. Salazar was an efficient 5-of-7 from the field, including 2-for-2 on treys.

Freshman Ana Dominguez had another all-around solid effort, with eight points and a game-high 12 rebounds (six offensive and six defensive). Dominguez also blocked two more shots (giving her 21 rejections in nine games).

Both teams displayed a strong inside effort, with 30 points apiece in the paint. Bench scoring was also even (16-16).

However, McMurry's second-chance points differential was a plus-5 (17-12). The War Hawks also utilized the fast break more effectively (8-2 points) than did the Flying Queens.

McMurry will be off until Monday, December 17 when it heads to Plainview to again face Wayland Baptist, this time on its floor, in the home-and-home series.
