ABILENE, Texas – You might have to excuse the McMurry University women's basketball team if it looks a little out of place wearing the home white uniforms when welcoming Wayland Baptist University to Kimbrell Arena on Saturday (2 p.m.). After all, the War Hawks (2-6) will be making their first appearance of the season on their home floor, nearly a month into the 2012-13 campaign.
Saturday will be “Meet Your War Hawks” Day, with all general admission seating available for just $1. The ticket price is also good for the second game of the day when the McM men's team takes on Incarnate Word (4 p.m.). All military members, civil service workers, and AYBA participants – and their families – will be admitted free of charge (with identification).
McMurry and Wayland Baptist will also face each other next Monday (Dec. 17) in Plainview (6 p.m.), in a home-and-home set.
The game pits two teams against each other who have both seemed to hit their stride recently. Wayland Baptist is 7-5 overall, winning three of its last five outings. The Flying Queens most recent loss is a common setback shared with the McM team...falling to NAIA #1-ranked Lubbock Christian last Wednesday.
Angeleigh Davis tops the WBU team in scoring at 14.1 p.p.g., followed by Laura Castillo's 9.2 p.p.g. LeTericka Anderson tops the rebounding at 5.0 r.p.g.
McM has also been playing hot of late, after a slow start against its tough schedule. The War Hawks have won two of their last three contests and are a last-second basket (by defending Heartland Conference champ Newman University) away from being on a three-game win skein.
In that loss at Newman, junior forward
Keshia Collins led the team with a season-high 25 points. In the win two days later at the University of Arkansas-Fort Smith, it was senior
Rikeita Thomas' 18 points that fueled the victory.
In the two games versus the Heartland foes last week, Collins averaged a double-double of 18.5 points and 10.0 rebounds per game. Overall, Collins leads the team at 11.6 p.p.g., while also averaging 7.0 r.p.g. and 3.5 steals per contest.
Freshman post player
Ana Dominguez also showed why she has become such a key cog in the War Hawks' machine, registering back-to-back double-double games of 15 points and 12 rebounds at Newman, followed by a 14 point-13 board effort at UAFS. Dominguez also averaged 3.0 blocks per game and has rolled up 19 “rejections” through the team's first eight games (2.4 b.p.g.).
Dominguez has three-consecutive double-figure rebound games. She has led the team in rebounding in five of eight games.
Thomas has averaged 8.8 p.p.g. Freshman
Claire Bruffey has appeared in all eight games off of McM the bench, averaging 6.3 points per game.
