PLAINVIEW, Texas – McMurry University's two-game win streak came to an end on Monday evening, losing at Wayland Baptist University, 64-50, at the Hutcherson Center. The loss dropped the War Hawks to 3-7, while the Flying Queens improved to 8-6.
Much like the first meeting back on December 8, the War Hawks jumped on WBU early. McMurry used a tough defense to force the Queens to burn two timeouts – as well as force several turnovers – by the 14:43 mark of the opening period, jumping out to an 11-2 lead.
Wayland Baptist battled back and re-took the lead, 19-18, with 5:42 left. However, a little over three minutes later, freshman
Claire Bruffey canned her only basket of the first half – a trey – to put her team on top again, 25-23.
McMurry took a 27-25 advantage into the halftime locker room, thanks largely to some deft passing that produced assists on nine of the teams 10 first half field goals.
The second half, however, was not as good to the War Hawks as WBU charged back…and then some. The Queens steadily pulled ahead and away in the final segment, building a double-digit lead – 52-42 – with 6::47 left in the game and led by as much as 15 points before settling on the 64-50 final margin.
Collins finished the game with 11 points, the only McM player in double digits, with seven points coming from the free throw stripe. Collins also had five rebounds and two blocks.
Vickers ended her night with nine points, hitting 4-of-9 from the field, and a team-leading six boards.
