War Hawk Women Clipped by Jets, 63-62

WICHITA, Kan. – McMurry University's women's basketball squad dropped a heart-breaker, 63-62, to defending Heartland Conference champion Newman University. The War Hawks (1-6), playing their seventh-straight road game to open the season, fell when the Jets (3-4) put in the winning basket with :05 left on the game clock and McM could not get off a final shot.

McMurry trailed at the half, 30-26, after being down by as much as seven points late in the period. Junior Keshia Collins helped keep things close in the first segment, hitting 7-of-10 from the floor and grabbing seven rebounds in the first 20 minutes of action.

As the second half began to unfold, McM went on an early run. A steal and layup by Rikeita Thomas at the 17:30 mark knotted matters at 32-32. That was followed by a 7-2 run as the War Hawks built their largest lead, 39-34, after a three-point play by Ana Dominguez.

The Jets battled back and re-took the upper hand at 41-40 with 13:31 left to play, setting the stage for the exciting finish. A big bucket from behind the arc by Sierra Maykus with 7:22 on the clock got the War Hawks even again, 51-51.

McMurry trailed by one – 59-58 – but twice turned the ball over on successive possessions. A bucket by NU made the deficit 61-58.

But Collins answered the bell once again for her team. A layup by Collins drew McMurry to within one, 61-60. That was followed by a steal with under two minutes remaining, setting up a McM go-ahead opportunity. Senior Jamie Wilson made a beautiful pass to Dominguez, who laid the ball in as McMurry forged to the front, 62-61 with 1:35 left to play.

But the Jets landed the winning bucket with a mere five seconds left to play, 63-62. McM brought the ball up court for one final try, but another turnover sealed the War Hawks' fate.

Collins had a monster game, leading all scorers with 25 points and completing the double-double with 11 rebounds. Collins hit 11-of-20 from the floor and had five steals.

Dominguez also had a double-double with 15 points and 12 rebounds (seven of the offensive variety). Dominguez also blocked three shots.

Wilson pulled down nine rebounds and Thomas added eight points.
