Women's Basketball Faces NAIA Pre-Season #1 Lubbock Christian on Monday

LUBBOCK, Texas – McMurry University women's basketball will face another tough foe in its second game of the young 2012-13 season, traveling to NAIA Pre-Season No.-1 ranked Lubbock Christian University on Monday. Tip-off at the Rip Griffin Center is slated for 7 p.m.

The Lady Chaps have done nothing to tarnish that pre-season prognostication, blowing out of the gate to a 5-0 record entering the match-up versus the War Hawks.

McMurry comes into the game with a 0-1 mark, tipping off its season last Friday evening with a loss, 79-58, at Lone Star Conference foe Midwestern State University. McM was without the services of three inside players: Shelby Dixon, Bridget Dorn and M.J. Vickers. Dixon and Dorn missed due to injuries, while Vickers is still competing as a member of McMurry's volleyball team.

LCU has no less than five players – Kelsey Hoppel (15.0 p.p.g.), Emily Atkins (13.8 p.p.g.), Kelsey Canavan (12.8 p.p.g.), Haley Burton (12.5 p.p.g.) and Nicole Hampton (10.8 p.p.g.) – all averaging in double-digit scoring through the first quintet of games.

Canavan and Hampton also top the Lady Chaps in rebounds at 8.8 and 8.3 caroms per game, respectively.

Lubbock Christian has is defeating its opponents by an average of 19.5 points per outing. As a team, LCU is shooting nearly 48 percent from the floor, 30 percent from three-point range and better than 80 percent from the free throw line.

The Lady Chaps are coming off of a 93-71 win over Southwestern Oklahoma State University on Saturday.

In the loss to MSU Friday, junior Keshia Collins – the team's top returning scorer and rebounder – picked up where she left off last season. Collins tallied 11 points as the only War Hawk in double figures of a balanced offensive effort.

Tory Salazar, Jaryn Koenig and Claire Bruffey all added eight points for McM head coach Veronica Snow's squad.

Ana Dominguez had four blocked shots, along with six points and four rebounds, in the loss. Newcomer Ashton Jones and vet Jamie Wilson led the War Hawks with eight rebounds, apiece.

The War Hawks fell victim to their own mistakes, as the Mustangs scored 29 points as a result of McM's 28 turnovers. McMurry's defense did limit the host MSU team to a miniscule 12-percent shooting (2-of-17) from three-point range. 44 of Midwestern's points were in the paint.

“We knew when we were picking our schedule it was going to be tough,” Snow said of the difficult schedule. “We want our kids to grow and grow up real fast.”
