McMurry Women's Hoops Tops Schreiner for Fourth Straight Win, 65-41

Box Score
ABILENE, Texas - McMurry University's women's basketball team earned its fourth-consecutive win with a 65-41 American Southwest Conference victory over Schreiner University at Kimbrell Arena.

The victory helped the War Hawks improve to 12-5 overall and 10-3 in the ASC West. the Mountaineers fell to 6-12 and 4-10 in ASC games.

It was also the eighth time this season that McM has held an opponent under 50 points in a game and fourth straight.

The War Hawks garnered an 11-point halftime cushion after letting the Mountaineers hang around for the early part of the opening period. Schreiner actually held a 9-7 lead with 13:28 left until the intermission. A jumper by Jamie Wilson (13 points) knotted matters at 9-9 and began an 8-0 run by the War Hawks that would spell SU's demise

A jumper by Rikeita Thomas (seven points) with 11 seconds remaining in the half gave McM the 30-19 advantage at the break.

McMurry kept a double-figure lead for all but 25 seconds of the second period. Another Wilson jumper with 3:19 left to play gave the War Hawks their largest lead of the night - 28 points - by making it 61-33.

McM's Keshia Collins led all scorers with 16 points, connecting on six-of-12 from the field and four-for-four from the free throw line.

M.J. Vickers was the only other McMurry player in double-digits with 10 points. Vickers also had a game-leading eight rebounds.

McMurry's defense held the Mountaineers to just 35 percent shooting from the floor (12-34) and allowed just one SU player - Olivia Swanner - to reach double figures (with 10 points). The unit also forced 22 Schreiner turnovers and booked 17 steals.

Conversely, the War Hawks shot 46 percent from the field (26-57), including a six-of-13 effort from beyond the arc.

"We definitely emphasized defense," McM head coach Veronica Snow said. "But this week we said 'ladies, we really need to shoot the ball better' and they were feeling good. I felt pretty good about us being able to shoot the ball.

"I was pleased with the girls' effort tonight."

McMurry will go for a fifth-consecutive win on Saturday afternoon (1 p.m.) when it hosts Texas Lutheran University at Kimbrell Arena.
