Tornados surge past McMurry, 17-9

ABILENE, Texas – A nine-run third inning propelled Concordia-Texas to a 17-9 win over McMurry University Friday night at Walt Driggers Field in American Southwest Conference West Division action. Kyle Bieschke drove in five runs and Colton Gommert homered and drove in four to help the Tornados move to 15-11 overall and 7-3 in league play.

Gommert hit a 3-run shot to start the scoring barrage in the third inning for the Tornados before the team pieced together six more runs in the inning and finished with seven hits in the frame. Gommert's homer was a line drive over the rightfield wall for his first long ball of the season; he finished with three hits.

Bieschke hit two run-scoring singles and a two-run triple to cap a three-hit night. CTX finished with 17 hits and every starter but Matt McManemin had a hit.

McMurry put up seven runs in its final four at bats but the War Hawks left empty handed as the Tornados matched that performance as well. Colin Butschek surrendered six runs but picked up win No. 6 on the season while Gerry Morrison pitched the final 3.1 innings for the Tornados to pick up his first save of the season.

IN the losing effort, Jake Mullin hit 4 for 5 and drove in three runs while Brian Durst drove in a pair. Austin Brook scollected three hits and Clay Schubert added a pair. Zack Hewitt picked up the loss to fall to 3-2 on the year and lasted just 2.1 innings. Stephen Greenwood and Chris Maldanado teamed up to combine for the last 6.2 innings of relief for the War Hawks.

McMurry fell to 7-18 overall and 4-6 in league play. Saturday's doubleheader becomes crucial for the War Hawks' chances at an eighth-straight trip to the ASC Postseason Tournament with 11 league games to spare.

The two teams will square off at 1 p.m. with a seven-inning game followed by a nine-inning contest.
