LUBBOCK, Texas – Lubbock Christian completed a regular-season sweep of McMurry with a 7-2 win Tuesday at Hays Field. The Chaps' four-run seventh inning proved to be the back-breaker as the War Hawks fell to 7-17 on the year while LCU improved to 23-8.
Jake Mullin tied the score at one when his double scored
Andrew Bell for McMurry in the fourth. Then, the War Hawks took the lead in the fifth when
Kory Moench scored on a balk from third base to give McMurry a 2-1 lead.
However, LCU drew two leadoff walks in the top of the fifth and both men came around to score to give the Chaps a 3-2 lead. Then, the home team sealed the deal with two run-scoring hits, a bases-loaded walk and a bases-loaded hit by pitch as LCU scored four runs on three hits to give the team a five-run advantage.
The War Hawks combined for three hits in their final four at bats, however, no McMurry runner advanced past second base. McMurry's
Logan Edge picked up the loss s the War Hawks used six pitchers. Edge gave up two runs over two innings of work and fell to 0-1 on the season.
Stephen Greenwood, Chris Maldanado and
Jake Mullin all had scoreless relief appearances in the losing effort.
LCU's Karson Robins picked up the win to move to 2-0 on the year despite giving up both McMurry runs. However, both were unearned to Robinson. Ryan Meade, Griffin Chandler and Ryan Burnaman combined to keep McMurry scoreless in the final four innings out of the bullpen.
Mike Marshall drove in three runs for LCU while Burnaman scored three runs and collected two hits. Mullin was the only War Hawk player with multiple hits, and he drove in a run along with his pair of hits.
Lubbock Christian defeated McMurry earlier in the season in Abilene Feb. 22 by a score of 6-5.
McMurry has a crucial three-game series with Concordia-Texas in Abilene this weekend in hopes of making its eighth-straight trip to the American Southwest Conference Postseason Tournament. At 4-5 in the ASC West Division, the War Hawks are tied for fourth place with Howard Payne while CTX is tied for second at 6-3.
The Tornados come to town for a single game at 7 p.m. Friday night and a doubleheader Saturday beginning at 1 p.m.
