ABILENE, Texas – Chandler Griffith's solo home run in the top of the ninth inning broke a 5-5 tie and the Lubbock Christian Chaparrals held on for a 6-5 win over McMurry at Walt Driggers Field Tuesday afternoon. Griffith was a defensive substitution in the bottom of the eighth and took advantage of his only plate appearance in the ninth to help LCU move to 9-0 on the season.
McMurry rallied from a 3-run deficit in the bottom of the eighth on run-scoring hits from
Walt Williams,
Jake Mullin and
Andrew Bell. Williams singled home Kevin Thornton, Mullin doubled home Williams and Bell tripled to score Mullin, which knotted the score at five runs apiece.
However, for the second-straight game the McMurry bullpen couldn't hold the momentum and the team fell to 1-5 on the season. Lubbock Christian's Richard Bohlken hit a solo home run for the game's first run at 1-0. Then, McMurry scored two runs in the bottom half of the fourth to take a 2-1 lead.
However, the Chaparrals scored four runs in the sixth including a Reid Chenworth solo home run and a two-run single from Ryan Burnman to take a 5-2 lead before McMurrry's 3-run eighth.
Both teams used a pitcher-by-committee system with Burnman taking the win pitching the final 1.1 innings for LCU.
Cory Davis picked up the loss after giving up the Griffith home run to move to 0-2 on the season.
McMurry returns to action Friday and Saturday with a 3-game set against UT-Dallas. The teams will play a single game at 2 p.m. Friday followed by a doubleheader Saturday beginning at Noon.
