ABILENE, Texas – No. 11 Chapman University completed its 3-game sweep of McMurry University Saturday with 6-3 and 6-5 wins in a doubleheader at Walt Driggers Field. In the first game McMurry gave up six runs in the first three innings before the rally fell short, and then in the second game, McMurry squandered a 5-1 lead to fall to 1-4 on the year.
Chapman improved to 4-4 on the season with the three-game sweep after a 10-1 win Friday. The pitching staff struck out McMurry 25 times over the three games and picked McMurry off the base paths four different times in Saturday's doubleheader.
McMurry returns to action Tuesday against Lubbock Christian at home at 5 p.m. Below is a recap of each game.
Game One: Chapman 6 McMurry 3
Travis McGee pitched seven strong innings, the Chapman got off to a quick offensive start, and then held off a McMurry rally as the Panthers took a 6-3 win in game one of the doubleheader to guarantee taking the series.
Chapman scored one run in the first, two in the second and three in the third, which proved to be all it would need in the victory. Tyler Surnbrock's bases-loaded single in the third highlighted the three-run inning for the Panthers to move the score to 5-0 before James Parr hit a run-scoring double to increase the advantage to 6-0.
McGee's only legitimate trouble game in the fifth inning when
Michael Dibiasi doubled home a run,
Andrew Bell hit an RBI groundout and
Matt Thompson's double scored a run to cut the Panther lead to 6-3.
McGee left the game allowing five hits, three runs, he walked three and struck out seven. In the eighth, McMurry threatened again when
Jake Mullin was hit by a pitch and
Matt Thompson singled to put runners on first and second with no outs. However, Chapman lifted reliever Kevin Osaki after the two batters faced, Kyle Tahbiana came in, picked off Mullin at second base, and he later avoided any McMurry runs with the bases loaded when a double play ended the inning.
Tachibana picked up the save in the win and McGee moved to 1-2 on the season with the win. McMurry starter
Jordan Brown was touched up for six runs, four of them earned, he walked six and struck out one in the loss. However, the silver lining for McMurry was the relief appearance of
Stephen Greenwood who threw the final 6.1 innings, he allowed just two hits and struck out three without giving up a run for the duration of the game.
Game Two: Chapman 6 McMurry 5
McMurry wasted a strong outing by freshman
Jordan Mattke, who allowed just four hits and two runs in six innings of work while Chapman rallied from a 5-1 deficit to score five runs in the final four innings to take a 6-5 win to complete the sweep.
The Panthers scored two runs in the seventh off reliever
Kory Moench when James Parr scored on a Troy Newman single after hitting his third double of the game. Then, Adam Kordich singled home Newman to bring the score within one run at 5-4.
McMurry brought in its closer
Cory Davis an inning early in the eighth, however, he gave up a leadoff double to Tyler Hadzinski who later scored when he stole third and the throw from Zach Rossman sailed into leftfield to advance him across the plate to tie the score.
In the top of the ninth. Hadzinksi drove home the winning run on a bloop single to right centerfield to score Charlie Piro. Hadzinski then made a diving catch from his second-base position in centerfield to rob McMurry's
Jake Mullin of a hit to start the bottom of the ninth.
Matt Thompson and
Charlie Hejny recorded consecutive groundouts to end the game.
Ben Levitt picked up the win in relief for Chapman allowing just one hit in the final five innings while striking out five to move to 1-0 on the season. IN the losing effort
Dylan De Leon had three hits and three RBI's while
Clay Schubert had two hits and an RBI. Davis picked up the loss to move to 0-1.
