McMurry women stay perfect in league play with 72-64 win over Hardin-Simmons

Box Score ABILENE, Texas – McMurry University remained undefeated in American Southwest Conference play with a 72-64 win over cross-town rival Hardin-Simmons Monday night. Keshia Collins had 20 points and six rebounds while M.J. Vickers scored 16 points off the bench in the victory.
 
The War Hawks improved to 6-0 to remain tied atop the ASC West Division with Concordia-Texas. CTX defeated No. 19-ranked Louisiana College at home Monday night in Austin.
 
McMurry led by as many as 16 points in the second half, but the Cowgirls fought back. HSU put together 10-0 run spanning from the 5:01 mark to the 2:32 spot to cut the lead to six points at 64-58. Coco Cartwright's 3-pointer capped the run for HSU, but the Cowgirls would get no closer than six.
 
Tory Salazar and Keshia Collins hit key shots and Celeste Belazario hit two free throws in the final 1:16 of the contest to keep the Cowgirl rally at bay.
 
HSU held a slight advantage from the field as the Cowgirls shot 42 percent and the War Hawks hit 38 percent of their shots. However, McMurry won the rebounding battle 45-32 and scored 23 second-chance points off 21 offensive boards to ensure victory.
 
Collins was 8 of 17 from the field and added four assists and two steals in 36 minutes of play to lead the charge. Vickers was 6 of 7 from the free-throw line and connected on two 3-point field goals while adding six boards. Belizario had 12 points and a team-high eight rebounds and Rikeita Thomas had 10 points and five assists.
 
In the losing effort, Angela Newcombe had 21 points and 17 rebounds; she was 7 of 9 from the field and 7 of 8 from the free-throw line. Kara Looten had 17 points and eight rebounds in the loss.
 
Hardin-Simmons fell to 4-4 overall and 2-3 in league play. McMurry resumes action Dec. 30 against NCAA Division II Tarleton State in Stephenville at 6 p.m.
