ABILENE, Texas – The McMurry women's basketball team was the giant killer for the second-straight game knocking off its second-straight nationally-ranked and undefeated team by defeating No. 19 Louisiana College 65-60 in overtime Saturday afternoon at Kimbrell Arena.
Rikeita Thomas scored nine of her 20 points in the overtime period helping McMurry outscore the Wildcats 12-9 in extra time. McMurry led 53-45 with 1:12 remaining before the Wildcats stormed back to avoid their first loss of the season when Kayla Guidry hit all three attempts on a three-shot foul, nailed a jumper and Janet Butler knocked in a 3-pointer to tie the score with 35 seconds remaining to cap the 8-0 run that spanned 37 seconds.
However, in overtime, McMurry's Thomas scored the first six points of overtime and the Wildcats were never closer than four points of the lead.
McMurry defeated undefeated and No. 23 Mississippi College Thursday night and Saturday dropped the Wildcats to 11-1 overall and 7-1 in American Southwest Conference play. McMurry took its third-straight victory and improved to 7-5 overall and 5-3 in league play.
Thomas' 20 points were a career-high and she shot 5 for 16 from the floor and 8 of 10 from the free-throw line.
Anna Berthel and
Jordan Stansell each had a double-double for McMurry as well. Stansell had 10 points and 11 boards while Berthel had 10 and 10 respectively and added six blocks.
Keshia Collins had six points, six rebounds and five steals off the bench.
In the losing effort, The Wildcats had 13 points from Tillisha Givens and 10 points apiece from Natosha Gottlieb and Roslyn Wilmer. McMurry held Louisiana College 24 points below their season average of 84.
McMurry returns to action Thursday in Abilene playing host to Howard Payne at 5:30 p.m.
