ABILENE, Texas –
Andi Lukaszewski's career-high 27 points and six 3-pointfield goals led McMurry past Texas Lutheran Saturday afternoon at Kimbrell Arena in American Southwest Conference West Division play. Lukasewski, the sophomore forward from Universal City, surpassed her previous career-high of 13 points and added eight rebounds to aide in the victory.
McMurry outscored the Bulldogs 54-24 in the second half after trailing by three points in the second half thanks toa 55 percent shooting effort in the second period. In addition, the defense held TLU in check as the Bulldogs managed just seven field goals on 28 attempts.
Texas Lutheran lead by as many as 10 in the half as they took a 39-36 lead into the locker room at intermission. However, McMurry opened the second half with 7-0 run capped off by a
Keshia Collins second chance basket with 19:10 to play to take its first lead of the ballgame. The teams traded leads two times before McMurry went on a 23-6 run that spanned 7:18 ending with an unconventional three-point play by Lukaszewski. With 9:16 left in the game Lukaszewski took a pass from
Tory Salazar at the top of the key for the final three-point bucket.
Lukasewski was the hero at 10 of 16 from the floor nailing four of her long-range shots in the first half. However, she had help from teammates
Erica Rawls and
Anna Berthel as well. Rawls scored in double figures for the second-straight game with 13 points off the bench while Berthel had 10 points, seven rebounds and six blocks to help defensively.
Tamisha Timpson led TLU with 23 points and six rebounds in the losing effort. The Bulldogs finished at just 33 percent from the floor, and in addition, McMurry took most of the advantages in the hustle categories. McMurry outscored TLU in the paint 36-20, scored 21 second-chance points compared to 13 for the Bulldogs and outscored the visitors on the fastbreak 6-2. McMurry's bench outscored TLU 57-9.
The win moves McMurry to 10-8 overall with an 8-6 league record while the loss drops Texas Lutheran to 7-12 overall and 6-9 in conference play. McMurry returns to action on Thursday vs. Schreiner in Kerrville at 5:30 p.m.
