HONOLULU, Hawaii – No. 3-ranked Christopher Newport closed the game with an 8-0 run in the final 1:18 to break a 59-all tie and avoided an upset from McMurry University at the Hoop N Surf Classic Monday afternoon. Barbara Davis hit a free throw with 1:18 remaining and Chelsie Schweers scored 13 of the Captains' final 17 points to aide in the victory.

McMurry's Anna Berthel hit the first 3-point field goal of her career with 2:35 to go to give McMurry a 57-56 lead. However, Schweers countered with a trey of her own before McMurry's Keshia Collins tied the score for the final time with 1:57 to play for McMurry.

After Davis hit one of two free throws McMurry turned the ball over three times in the final 1:57 and never attempted a field goal as the Captains improved to 6-1 on the season. CNU entered the tournament at 6-0, however, fell to No. 10 Thomas More College Sunday in the Captains' first game in the Hoop N Surf Classic.

McMurry came out swining in the first half shooting 48 percent from the floor, led by five at halftime, and built a nine-point lead in the second half. But, Schweers proved to be too much for McMurry in the end finishing with 32 points and converted on 12 of her 13 free-throw attempts. McMurry sent CNU to the line 29 times and the Captains converted 23 of 29 attempts at the charity stripe.

M.J. Vickers and Berthel each finished with 12 points while Keshia Collins scored 11 poitns and had six rebounds off the bench. Since entering into the starting lineup Thursday against East Texas Baptist, Vickers has scored in double digits in all three games.

McMurry fell to 5-5, and the tournament in Honolulu concludes the teams' non-conference schedule with 15 American Southwest Conference games remaining. McMurry returns to action Jan. 6 against nationally-ranked Louisiana College in Abilene at 5:30 p.m.
