HSU dominates glass in 70-52 win over McMurry

ABILENE, Texas – The Hardin-Simmons Cowgirls snapped a three-game losing skid to cross-town rival McMurry Tuesday night taking a 70-52 victory in American Southwest Conference play at the Mabee Complex. HSU doubled McMurry's rebounding efforts at 52-26 and limited the visiting team to just a 34-percent shooting effort.

The Newcombe sisters from Hardin-Simmons alone out-rebounded McMurry with Lindsey Newcombe tallying 19 while her younger sister Angela grabbed 10 boards. Lindsey added 25 points on 11 of 16 shooting and Jasmine Lewis had 16 for the Cowgirls.

McMurry shot just 22 of 65 from the floor in the loss with Rikeita Thomas and Keshia Collins in double figures with 15 and 10 points respectively.

The Cowgirls jumped out to an early 8-0 lead over McMurry in the first four minutes of the game. Hardin-Simmons would not relinquish the lead the entire game. McMurry cut the lead to 16-15 with 7:13 to play in the first when Victoria Salazar's layup capped the visitors' 7-0 run. However, the Cowgirls would counter to outscore McMurry 18-8 to end the first half.

The closest McMurry would get in the second half came with 14:39 remaining when Collins hit a shot to cut the HSU lead to 40-32. But, McMurry was unable to recover finishing the second half just 11 of 31 from the field.

After a 59-percent first-half effort, HSU finished the game 27 of 52 from the floor for 52 percent. Despite turning the ball over 25 times compared to McMurry's 12, the Cowgirls' offensive firepower was too great.

McMurry moves to 3-4 overall and fell to 2-3 against ASC competition. Hardin-Simmons' record improved to 7-1 overall and 5-1 in league play. McMurry goes on the road Thursday to take on East Texas Baptist University in Marshall at 5:30 p.m.
