UTSA surges past McMurry 84-58

SAN ANTONIO – McMurry University started strong, however, UT-San Antonio surged to an 84-58 win Sunday evening at the Convocation Center in non-conference action. McMurry held the lead on six different occasions deep into the first half, but the Roadrunners took control in the closing minutes of the first frame and never looked back.

UTSA's Melvin Johnson led the team with 20 points, Terry Fields added 16, and Omar Johnson posted 12 points to pace the Roadrunners that shot 52 percent for the contest.

Devin Gibson, UTSA's leading scorer entering into the contest, had a solid all-around game with eight points, eight assists and five steals. The senior guard sparked UTSA in the second half with all five of his steals and four assists coming in a 13-1 run to open the second half.

The second-half run gave the Roadrunners a 50-28 lead and deflated the sails of McMurry. The visitors led by as many as five points in the first half and its last lead came with 3:21 left in the opening period when Jeremie Hart's cutting layup put McMurry up 26-25. However, UTSA closed the first half with a 10-1 run and went to intermission with an eight-point advantage.

Hart scored 14 points in the losing effort for McMurry in a 7 of 9 shooting effort for the visitors. Jamal Anene finished the game with eight points and 10 rebounds. McMurry shot 49 percent from the field connecting on 21 of 43 attempts. McMurry suffered 21 turnovers, which the Roadrunners turned into 32 points.

UTSA, the NCAA Division I school, improved to 10-3 on the season and held McMurry to its season low. McMurry fell to 7-3 and will return to action Thursday when it plays host to LeTourneau in American Southwest Conference action at 7:30 p.m. at Kimbrell Arena.

The Roadrunners now hold a 5-0 all-time series advantage over McMurry and UTSA has matched its best start since the 2000-2001 season.
