ALPINE, Texas - McMurry University hit seven of its last eight free throws in the final 4:02 and used a 9-4 run to close the game and take a 80-75 win over Sul Ross State Thursday night at the Gallego Center in American Southwest Conference play. With the score tied at 71 with 4:11 to play, McMurry sealed the game with clutch shooting at the charity stripe and the Lobos missed their last seven shots of the game.
Sul Ross had a short-lived lead in the first half, but in the second half never led despite tying the game on a successful jumper by Steven Johunkin with 4:11 left in regulation. McMurry's
Jerome Leach hit a pair of free throws,
Jeremie Hart hit 3 of four and
Robert Moreno hit two free throws and added a bucket in the final stretch. After Johunkin's bucket, Sul Ross State managed just four more free throws and couldn't complete the comeback.
The Lobos couldn't cool the hot-shooting visitors who finished the game with a 52-percent effort after connecting on 29 of 56 shots.
Jamal Anene had his second consecutive double-double with 18 points and 12 rebounds while the 6-foot 2-inch Hart, completed his third consecutive double-double with 17 points and 13 boards.
Steven Luckey added 15 points and
Darrick Matthews had 11 points off the bench.
Johunkin gave it all he had scoring a game-high 23 points in the loss for the Lobos. He hit 9 of 16 shots, grabbed six rebounds and had two steals. Andy Hulsey and Juston Weldon had 18 and 11 points respectively off the bench. The Lobos shot 39 percent for the game and just 56 percent from the line. McMurry, on the other hand, connected on 19 of 25 chances from the free-throw line.
McMurry improved to 10-5 overall and improved to 8-3 in the ASC while the Lobos fell to 5-11 overall and 4-8 in league play. McMurry will continue its road trip Saturday in Brownwood when it faces Howard Payne at 3 p.m.
