McMurry holds off Schreiner, 74-64

Jamal Anene had 19 points and 12 boards in Saturday's win over Schreiner
KERRVILLE, Texas – McMurry held on for a 74-64 win over Schreiner in American Southwest Conference play Saturday afternoon at the Edington Athletic Complex. Jamal Anene and Jeremie Hart each had a double-doubles to help McMurry take its seventh win in league play.

Hart scored 24 points and had 10 boards for his second-straight double-double while Anene had 19 points and 12 boards. Steven Luckey had 17 points including a 9 of 14 effort from the free-throw line.

McMurry jumped out to a 27-12 lead in the first half, however, the Mountaineers closed the gap and trailed by just one point at halftime 33-32. In the second half, McMury led by as many as nine points, however, Schreiner fought back to cut the lead to one point with 4:52 remaining after a successful jumper from Trevor Connor to make the score 59-58 in favor of Mcmurry. However, from there McMurry closed the game with a 15-6 run keyed by six points from Luckey.

McMurry shot 44 percent from the floor and hit 27 of 38 free throws  for the contest. Schreiner's 20 turnovers in the game resulted in 28 points for McMurry on the other end. The Mountaineers shot just 37 percent from the floor for the game partly due to its 4 of 28 performance from 3-point land. Riley Battle and Trevor Connor each scored 12 points in the loss for McMurry.

Darrick matthews had 10 points and five rebounds off the bench for McMurry. Robert Moreno scored three points, had four assists and had five steals. That gives the senior point guard 17 steals in his last three games.

Schreiner dropped to 3-11 overall and 3-8 in ASC play while McMurry improved to 9-5 overall and 7-4 in league play.

McMurry will continue its four-game road trip Thursday in Alpine when it takes on Sul Ross State at 7:30 p.m.
